Talking Two BES or not Two BES

Please Login to Remove!

Hi,

We are currently planning to migrate from Exchange 5.5 to 2003. The problem we have is that we need to change org's, but we can't move all the blackberry users at once as they are scattered around 4 different countries. Is it possible for us to run two BES 4.0 servers in two different org's, one to keep the 5.5 users working and the other to keep the migrated 2003 users working.

Now has anyone done this or knows of a problem with doing this.

Regards
Spannermonkee

You must do it with two servers (with the two org's), the only thing is you need to re-activated users you move from one server to the other. If you need only for a short period the second BES then you can use a time bombed (trail) server.

A second BES 4.0 server in the Exchange 2003 environment will require that those users recradle. Also, maintaining the old BES in the Exchange 5.5 org increases the administration effort, not to mention the eventual migration of those users from Exchange 5.5 to Exchange 2003. That amounts to doubling the work effort.
The simplest option might be to export and then import the users onto a BES 4.0 in the Exchange 2003 org. This BES would use the same SRP ID and Authen keys, so that the users are not inconvenienced with re-cradling. The numbers of users would be important to know before hand to kind of gage the effort and time required to complete the process.
If the users are already scattered, but all on one BES in the Exchange 5.5 world, it's not going to be a major leap to maintain the same scenario for the new BES 4.0. As a matter of fact, scattered users will be least of your worries if you can replace it with ease of administration and deployment.

If two different orgs, then you'll need two BES servers (missed that part)

Thanks both of you for your help, we were just a little concerned when the consultants we hired gave us the RIM article below but missing one vital part "One BlackBerry Enterprise Server cannot provide email redirection for two different Exchange organizations".
We have over a hundred Blackberry users and a 1000 email account spread over 4 countries and 23 sites, each site having to be moved over to AD one at a time due to the way our servers and network is setup. So when we were told that we would have to remove the BES and reinstall in the new org and while this was happening only the Blackberry users that had been moved over to AD would work, we were very shocked.

We could therefore understand why some people given this sort of news would scrap Blackberry's as they moved there users over to AD 2003 and give them push email instead. But we are glad to hear that two servers can be used to get round this problem that I'm sure lots of people are having. Please see below Blackberry's article on moving from org to org.

Thanks

How To - Migrate BlackBerry Wireless Handhelds between two Exchange Organizations

Last Updated: 22 November 2005
Article Number: KB-02060

-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Summary
This article applies to the following:

BlackBerry Enterprise Server®
Microsoft® Exchange
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Details
Migrating Microsoft Exchange mailboxes from an Exchange 5.5 or 2000 organization to another organization, while maintaining the BlackBerry Enterprise Server information does not work.

Currently, there is no known utility or method that will retain the BlackBerry Enterprise Server information in this scenario. The BlackBerry Enterprise Server service account mailbox stores a pointer to the Exchange Server Distinguished Name (DN) that cannot be migrated to another organization. This information is only retained, when using the Microsoft Exchange Task Wizard to move the mailboxes between Exchange servers within a site.

One BlackBerry Enterprise Server cannot provide email redirection for two different Exchange organizations.

Migrate BlackBerry Enterprise Server to a different organization

Remove the BlackBerry Enterprise Server software from the originating domain and organization.
Move users and mailboxes from one domain and organization to another.
Reinstall the BlackBerry Enterprise Server Software.
Add the BlackBerry Enterprise Server to the BlackBerrry Servers object in Exchange Administrator > Site > Configuration, if using BlackBerry administration extensions or into the appropriate routing group, if using BlackBerry Enterprise Server Management console.
Add the BlackBerry wireless device to the BlackBerry Enterprise Server.
Cradle the handhelds and generate an encryption key.

Default We Have Been Through This

We are also in the midst of a long migration from Exchange 5.5 to Exchange 2003. As previously stated you will need two BES servers, one for the 5.5 environment and one for Exchange 2003. We do everything wirelessly and cradling is not necessary. There is no migration path for this. The only tried and true method for doing this is to remove the user from the Exchange 5.5 BES, wipe the device, add the user to the new BES, and reactivate the device.

If the device is not wiped we have seen that at some point, a day, a week, a month later the customer will get a red X when trying to send email from the device. Some users may also need to have DBCLEAN run on their profiles, some multiple times to clear out the information connecting them to the Exchange 5.5 connected BES.

Thank you for the advise on wiping the handhelds. Its good to know some of the pit falls of changing BES.

Default One more thing

One more thing that you are probably aware of but when we first did it a few years ago we were very surprised. You must have two SRP numbers (licenses) even during migration as RIM will recognize that you have the same SRP on two servers and shut the service down. You then must call RIM to get it reactivated. We now have three, one for the lab, one for 5.5, and one for 2003. When 5.5 goes away we will just add the 5.5 server in as a second BES server for the 2003 environment.
