I have both a Verizon PC 5220 EVDO aircard and a 7130e with EVDO service, both of which are paid for by the company I am wondering if I should give up the air card. Main concern is logistics (separate bills, etc.) and hassles like that. Also, concerned about not wasting money (even though its not my $$$). I travel alot and the aircard comes in handy, just wondering if its worth having both?

When I got my 7130 I returned my air card. Less stuff to carry around.

Are there situations where you need to use voice and data simultaneously? If not, then go with the 7130e only...

It is also a matter of convenient. Just shuff the card in and click on your IE6. No cable to hook up, no BT to search for. The card really does not take up that much space on travelling. You also don't have to ever worry if you are missing any phone calls during a download, or getting disconnected to a vpn because you just need to answer this call.

Personally i like the convenience of having both an aircard and my berry....my vpn takes forever to log into and if i get a data interupt message due to a call my vpn sees that as a disconnect, and now i have to re-authenticate all over again...PITA

I would keep both if you can. Although the BlackBerry is much better than having just an aircard. Its always nice to have the backup. I love the 7130e and it works great as a modem. If you have to get rid of the Aircard just remember you still can get broadband access to the net and access to your email even if your laptop battery dies. Thats the advantage of the BB over any aircard.

The 7130e from VZW doesn't support Bluetooth DUN -- it must be tethered via USB.

For me, it came down to cost vs usage. is $15/mo extra to tether your 7130e on top of the $45 unlimited data charge. If I understand VZW's pricing correctly (which is a huge "if", since not even their reps understand it), having a 7130e and an aircard costs $60 for unlimited data on the aircard, and I'd still have to pay $45 for unlimited data on the 7130e.

For the amount of time I use EVDO, I can live with tethering.

After a hard look at work practices, I have decided to keep both. I find that it is useful to have both, especially after a long day of meetings and waiting in the airport, doing email and returning calls simultaneously. May seem trivial, but it happens often for me.

003402 - do you travel outside US/Can?

how about keeping the EVDO card but moving to an 8700? Then you have:

International roaming
International GPRS/EDGE/GSM - and if you bought a Lifebook, on laptop 3G where available.
but retain the superior d/l speed for EVDO for laptop connectivity.

Don't do too much international travel, all over the states tho, but that may change within the next year....Thanks for the advice

we are continually moving Bell users to Rogers temporarily and back because they're going to Caribbean/Mexico/Europe on holiday and want to stay connected. When number portability comes we will probably move some (maybe all) people to Rogers but we are looking hard at EVDO cards as well as the new WiMax service Rogers and Bell are jointly offering.

We tested sustained d/l speeds recently:
gprs 20kbps, dialup 41kbps, edge 70kbps, evdo 409kbps

So how does a teathered 7130e compare to a dedicated card? Can we expect similar results?
