Question BES and E14

Please Login to Remove!

Anyone know if RIM is working with MS yet on E14 or Exchange 2010 as it's rumored to be called? Rumor has it the BES is definitiately not working with the next version.

I see a lot of talk about BES 5.0, and it's new features, but nothing on if they're getting away from CDO or even MAPI and towards EWS maybe.

Seeing as the program is not released, I'm not sure how we would know if BES was working with it.

there are a number of companies that are running TAP on it and what not. I just hope RIM isn't going to repeat the E2007 fiasco where it was what 6-8 months before they could actually support E2007.

We're in the Exchange 2010 TAP and I was all excited to see the name of this thread, and really bummed to see the content.

Here was the response from my RIM technical account manager 2 months ago: "What's E14?"

Yikes

MarkF, have you heard anything more from your RIM TAM in the last couple months? Last time I chatted with anyone related to RIM was that internally they were still on Exchange 2003.

In regards to dc/dc, beta was released, at least to those involved in TAPS and Ignite, heck, even Symantec is working to make Enterprise Vault supported with Exchange 2010. I would sure hate for RIM to be embarressed by Symantec and not have a functional support with the beta programs of Exchange 2010, expecially considering the mobile enhancements to ActiveSync as well as a Mobile Device Manager 2008 available to managed them, all RIM is going to have is a better security model, and fewer people are caring about opening up the 443 port.

I'm really hoping someone from RIM is reading this, people were able to patiently wait for E2007 support, most were off E2000 when it came out anyway. But a lot, I believe the number is +60% are still on 2003, but will be going into extended support once 2010 comes out, and they're going to want to skip 2007.

Korbyn - yes, RIM will be working with Microsoft to support E2010. Nothing official yet, the legal teams are fleshing out the details.

which means..... Summer 2010 or later I suppose. bugga.

I've got a few clients already bugging me about getting them on 2010 and even threatening to switch to ActiveSync devices... I wished them luck on that point, a lot of people, including myself, they would be prying BB's out of their cold dead hands before that happens.

I also gently remind them that there is still the concerns of Backup, Antivirus, email Archiving to be supported as well.

Thanks, good to know they are somewhat engaged, even if it's not technically engaged yet.

I think you have the wrong idea of the market, companies don't want to spend tens let alone hundreds of thousands into a new mail server product that has just come out and hasn't had been broken in yet. So no big corporate office is doing to switch to Exchange 2010 until there is at least SP1 or SP2, or until their support contracts run out with Microsoft with what they have now.

A colleague of mine who works on EMC's elite support team has already seen banks and other fortune 500 companies switching to Exchange 2007 which would mean they too have locked themselves in with a long and lengthy service contract with Microsoft so Exchange 2007 will still have a few years of shelf life in it even after Exchange 2010 comes out which no one will touch initially, well except for the smaller companies who have no clue what they are getting into. I work for one who has been running Exchange 2007 since it came out (before I started working for them); was I sure glad Microsoft released SP1 when they did, geez! :o)

btw, EMC's elite support team only deals with companies have 4000+ users around the world and are Microsoft Platinum partners.

It will be interesting to see how RIM manages to intergrade BES with Exchange 2010 as I am sure Microsoft will completely move away from the way RIM takes to Exchange now. Also I would hope that RIM engineers take the they have now to build a better platform and test it on Exchange 2007 as I am sure most of the basic component Exchange 2007 will be in Exchange 2010 but made to look differently still operating the same way and move away from doing the old school way otherwise say bye bye to RIMs market share as companies will not tolerate that they have to continue to run out dated software in the back-end so people can get their messages on their Blackberries.

Again I say this... RIM and Microsoft should really team up and work together offering some kind of built in component to Exchange. I am sure between Microsoft and RIM they can figure out something when it comes to licensing and royalities as RIM and MS are very good at making money in those areas. :o)

With 60-65% of the market still running on Exchange 2003, and it being in extended support, we are already seeing clients opting to skip 2007 and chomping at the bit for 2010.

Normally I would agree with you, on the revolutionairy phase of a product, i.e. 5.5-->2000 or 2003-->2007 but this is more of a evolutionairy phase, i.e. 2000-->2003. I was appart of a +10,000 environment, and we went quite quickly from 2000-->2003, many things fixed, very few processes changed, I suspect the same for 2007->2010 environments too.

Aging hardware and canceled projects due to recession, and timing of the release of 2010... next year will be a very busy year of people skipping 2007 and going to 2010 and I've already got clients on 2007 chomping at the bit to get to 2010.

Granted I'm not dealing with +4000 user evironments, more SMB's, but I know of a few large organizations that are looking at waiting, to many things fixed in 2010. While Beta1 is receiving rave reviews, I did find it buggy and inconsistant, contrary to the hype that's out there, so I'm very much looking forward to the next beta or RC, which should be Aug/Sept to see how much it will really be improved.

And that's what Microsoft relies on is you little guys switching to the latest and greatest broken product so that they can fix it eventually pushing the 4000+ user businesses to using it.

Oh and what's going to be more interesting, with all the people you upgraded to Exchange 2007, once Exchange 2010 comes out I am willing to bet you that the hardware they have now will require more upgrading to be able to handle Exchange efficently. :o)

I have seen companies throwing 30k or more into hardware alone just to run Exchange 2007 following Microsoft best practices with 100 mailboxes. I doubt Microsoft or the guys in India will make the final product any easier when it comes to hardware constraints as that's always the rule of thumb when it comes to Microsoft! ;o)

Someone's got to take one for the team

Actually the only real change in hardware requirements for 2010 so far appear to be for the CAS roles. What I, and a number of the SMB's are looking forward to is to a two server CAS/HT/MBX configuration with a DAG, and have full redundancy with 2 servers instead of 4.

That's not 100% correct as I am looking at Microsoft's Unified Messaging Architecture for Exchange 2010, which suggest that Exch 2010 is going to be alot more hardware dependant than Exchange 2007 is, 2010 will completely intergrate into your organizations VoIP network were Exchange monitors all the messages coming in and going out of your VoIP network if you choose to go that route but I am sure your little SMB companies will want to once Office 2010 comes out! It's going to require a lot of processing power, RAM, and hard drives (RAID stacks) to manage it plus you will probably have to invest in TB's of offline storage for backing up the stores for at least 7 years (according to the law in Canada now).

Microsoft® Silverlight® Snack Player (This is the URL I just viewing the UMA for Exchange 2010)

Believe me it won't be cheap! :o)

We're just testing Exchange 2010 and I was surprised to find it (mostly) working after migrating a user.
BES 4.1.6 (MR3)
Noted issues:
Meeting invites are not received in the BB inbox, left as tentative and still requires processing in Outlook.
Any updates to meetings done on the device fail to send.
Creating new meetings from device fail to send to attendees and do not sync to Outlook.

Sending and receiving of emails appears fine.
Contacts, Notes and Tasks synch'ing also appear fine.

Anybody have any update on when this will be officially supported?

Can you give some more details about your environment? Are you just running BES 4.1.3 and Exchange 2010 on Server 2008. Or do you have Exchange 2007 servers too.

Running BES 4.1.6 mr3 and Exchange 2010 on Server 2008.
No Exchange 2007 servers.
Have since run into a few mailbox access problems that are probably just permission related but we won't pursue this until full support is announced and relevant BES service packs released.

except all those Office 2003 & 2007 installs that will still need the same access that RIM uses for BES.
