Default New to BB, have AppWorld trouble

Please Login to Remove!

Hello, I just got my new BB 9800 and I can't figure out why it won't allow me to access AppWorld, Twitter, Facebook (apps I found not to work for now).

It's an ATT BB and had it unlocked to work in Europe.

So here's what's not working so far and I hope you guys can help me out so I can start enjoying this phone asap

Fresh out of the box, had it unlocked, came home, connected it to the Desktop Manager and run all the updates it displayed. Some time during the updates i started getting a 507 Error... I let the phone finish updating, it restarted (took a very long time i might add). Anyways, finally it restarted and for some reason I can't access Facebook, Twitter or Appworld, i keep on getting the message that the features are not supported by my carrier ???

I have a data plan and browsing works perfectly (so i figure data works on the phone)

How come I can't access those features, is it because I am in Europe right now ?

Thanks a lot !

It could be the fact that you are on a service provider that doesnt allow it but hey I dont know about the eurpoe plans so I wouldnt be the best to answer that.

as for the new reload we everything you described of the 507 error and the slow first boot is normal

one thing you can check is your service books, and also make sure that the time on the device is set to network time and not manual.

go to options > device> advanced system settings > service books look for anything that says facebook or twitter in there. What they are instructions on how your Blackberry is suppose to operate on the Data network and Voice Network.

another thing that you have to keep in mind is that unlocked phones are not always garenteed to work fully on the network you bring it to.

I see, I will check the service books once the phone is fully charged and will go from there. Hopefully everything else is going to work. Thanks for your help though !

wifi will only work if our device has if your phone has been provisioned for full data, after you have that it should work, fingers crossed!

You indicated you have a data plan, but do you have a BlackBerry Data Plan? Not the same and required for BB Apps and often needed to get the Service Books in order to use WiFi.

You, the user, do not manually configure the services on the BlackBerry device. That is done automatically via the service books, which are pushed to the device.

You can open a service book and take a look if you are curious. But just look.

Also, to answer another question, you need the BlackBerry data plan to use the BlackBerry branded data apps, and also some third-party apps.

BlackBerrys are different. While they can be used without a BlackBerry data plan for some non-BlackBerry data (such as opera mini on a generic data plan), they are still purpose built to be the hardware interface for BlackBerry services. RIM is not a simple hardware manufacturer; they also provide specialized data services via the carriers. That's the way it is.

So I was told. I had to switch my 10 euro a month 500mb data plan to the 12 euro per month bb data plan which ONLY includes 5mb of traffic ! ) how can that be enough ?

5? Not 500?

500 can be more than enough for many things on a BlackBerry -- just don't do a lot of media sharing, and don't download any videos. But 5 MB? Doesn't sound right.

I had a regular 500MB data plan and now I have the BB 5MB (yes five) ) They said for a BB it's more than enough, since data is compressed differently. I don't get it...

I don't know. I still can't get my head around the way mobile carriers do things in some countries. In my experience, the BlackBerry data plan is instead of and not added to a generic mobile data plan. And on my plan, there is no distinction between data through the BlackBerry APN and the T-Mobile APN (i.e. data is data is data)

You might benefit from scanning those posts by MidnightDraven where she is responding to questions about data plans.

You may also want to have another discussion with your carrier, and talk to a different person, about what you are paying for and what is what.

OP indicates unlocked AT&T branded device, being used in Europe. Profile says Vodaphone.
