Please Login to Remove!
E911 Only vs Location On
What's the difference? Why would I prefer one over the other?

E911 Only will only offer your GPS location to emergency 911 services.
Location On will allow you to use GPS with applications on your phone, such as navigation apps, Geotagging photos, etc...

Mine is set up to E911 Only, and Google Maps seems to work just fine.

Right.
If you turn it to location it should be within about 10 meters if you have a good signal.

That's not GPS. This is cell tower triangulation, because you currently have your GPS on E911 only.
Set it to 'Location On' and you'll get a true GPS reading in Google Maps. |

Is it working or not?
Has anybody switched their gps out of E911 only mode and turned on location?
Does it give you precision location information in google maps?
I haven't picked up the phone yet, just wondering if I'm still going to need to use a gps puck.

Yes, i did that and it found my house within a few hundred yards I guess, and I was indoors. Only problem was it appeared to kill the battery so I have turned it off now.

I have not been able to attribute any significant battery drain to setting GPS Services to Location On. This is on a number of Bolds, 8900s, Storms and Tours.
I have seen increased battery drain with apps running in the background like VZNav, GoogleMap, and other apps that are network intensive. Setting Application Center to Auto Refresh is another that can cause faster battery drain. With devices that are Wi-Fi enabled, battery drain seems to be much faster.

That's the way I see it too. Just setting the GPS services to Location ON won't do anything battery-wise UNLESS you have a GPS app running. When you're done you Menu>Exit the GPS app (I use GoogleMaps) and that's that.

Just curious. What do folk use the GPS on their BlackBerry's for? I love GPS in my car but I see little point in bothering with it on a hand-held device. Enlighten me folks!

I don't own a GPS in my car... if I go to a different town and get lost, my phone can help me find my way...

FYI
I use my GPS on my BlackBerry with Google Maps whenever I need GPS, even at times, I've used it over my incar navigation. The great thing about it is that I can pinpoint locations based on where I am (i've had my gps report 3m radius which is pretty much damn close accurate) and it helped me find starbucks, movie theatre's or a store or place I need to get to. I can see why GPS is an essential, now if Verizon can make good on their claim and come out with the Wifi version of the Tour. I'll be one happy camper!
p.s. - I had a meeting with the reps, and they said they will be coming out with a wifi/gps tour in 2010 sometime, obviously after they release the storm 2!!! fingers crossed!
