RIM confirms HSDPA BlackBerry
CEO says he is playing with prototype

by Stuart Miles

RIM's president and CEO Mike Lazaridis has confirmed that the company is developing a HSDPA enabled BlackBerry.

The comments came in a FT interview when the paper asked the CEO what his latest squeeze was.

The reply:

"One of our prototypes - a 3.5G BlackBerry. It's very fast over third-generation networks that have HSDPA."

The news will be music to the ears of BlackBerry fans looking for fast internet access away from a Wi-Fi connection.

Earlier in the year we reported on rumours that RIM was working on a 9000 series BlackBerry that would sport HSDPA as well as Wi-Fi and be due out in 2008.

We will keep you posted.

I find it funny that Balsillie mentioned at the BlackBerry Executive Summit Series presentation that 3G was like dynamite in that you add too much and it explodes (the bandwidth pipeline, that is). He said there is not enough carrier bandwidth available to support a massive rollout and implementation of 3G. Let's face it, the adoption rate of 3G-capable devices (UMPC, smartphones, cellular phones, laptop cards, etc.) is minimal, especially in terms of active use of the bandwidth. I tend to agree with Jim, but he gave no hints at all concerning the BlackBerry 9000 and did all he could to criticize the carriers and their bandwidth implementations. I find it amusing.

P.S. - With news like this, it tends to be posted the day it was announced (two days ago). Just continuing what penpower mentioned first...

Sure. Why not? From Vodafone's ROADMAP you could see that it was HSDPA, of course those aren't final or anything... but Yeah, that was the plan .
