You'll be able to do voice and SMS, but I think i've read that MMS wouldn't work without the data plan. The OZ Messenger that comes with the Pearl uses SMS, but my icon didn't show up for it until my service books were sent, which would require you to have a data plan.

I can't answer your question because I don't have unlimited email/internet/text or the BB plan but I think you should get the Pearl!

Without a BlackBerry Data Plan you will not be able to use an AIM or any other messenger program. Voice and SMS. Not sure about MMS.

Yes, you can send and recieve SMS and MMS without having a Data Plan. Data Plan is for internet, Email, and instant messages.

You can IM without dataPlan also, The bundled IM app uses SMS, each msg to and fro counts as 1 SMS.

So I can use IM without dataPlan, if I just have the text message option every month? (no internet/email option). I tried downloading the apps but BBWeather and Verichat don't work for me.

I just got my BB Pearl with TMo. few days ago, WITHOUT the data plan and couldn't do MMS, or BB PIN Messages, or Internet. The Browser and the IM program by OZ was completely hidden...I called and they explained to me that it goes through the data portion of the service, so you must have the data plan...I got it and I'm happy with it

There are a few 3d party apps that can do this. I use Verichat - works perfect.

Don't take this the wrong way, but why would you want to get any Blackberry, or the Pearl for that matter, without some type of data plan? Without the data plan it's just usable as a cell phone, and it would be a waste of money in my opinion to pay $199-$400 for a phone that only uses text messages and the phone, unless you like the look of the Pearl that much.

Yep, Mrsmokey is correct. You WILL NOT HAVE MMS IF YOU DO NOT HAVE THE DATA PLAN. When you receive MMS from another phone, it'll just send as a text message as well to check out a website.
My friend has the BB Pearl but since she has a smart access plan she's not able to add the data plan. Can't really do much without the data plan to be honest...you can still install programs and games of course through USB etc.though.
The other question, yes there are a few AIM programs that allow you to chat with just data. I've used Yak-On, Ramble, and IM+ extensively and I love IM+ the best especially since it imports your current PC settings AND allows you to be signed on at the same time with other chat programs. In the end though I still got rid of it because I use tons of text messaging anyway (yes I have BB plan + unlimited text message = 19.99 + 14.99/mo) so just decided to use the goold ol' simple OZ program that comes with it that requires a DATA plan AND SMS.
