Default new curve user, some questions

Please Login to Remove!

Just got a curve from tmobile. I have had a pearl so I know the basics to it but I have some questions:
  1. The wireless option; "UMA"; what is it? Does it cost to go online? Any charges from tmobile by using the wifi option?
  2. I read somewhere something about UMA being a tmobile service that is $10 a month...so is wifi not free then?!
  3. The trackball: is it replaceable, does it "break down"?
  4. I'm wanting an INVISISHIELD for the Curve to protect it: What is the best quality? Where can I get it, and are there any codes to get discounts...like an 80% off or something?! (I saw that with ZAGG protectors one time)

Thats all I can think of for now, its really a good phone so far! THANKS!!!

The wifi is free. The 10 dollar service is for unli. Minutes while connected via UMA. As far as the track ball is concerned I don't know if its replaceable or not. And only time will tell if it will break down. I have had the pearl and the 8300 curve and had no problems with it. Now I am on the 8900 curve. And I love it. Sooo fast!

Only if you are purchasing the files. If the files are free you have no worries. The signal is free and its much quicker than edge. Just be careful using the UMA for phone calls and then leaving the wifi area because you will drop a call when it makes the switch

Trackball unit is replaceable. You basically pry open the silver bezel surrounding it and the trackball unit comes pops out. Not sure what the price is but definitely replaceable.

UMA is basically wifi calling. You can use the service regardless if you have the unlimited $10 plan or not. But if you don't have the plan, using UMA will deduct your minutes like normal anytime minutes.

There's lots of options for device protection. You can get cases, screen protectors, skins (like Best Skins Ever).

I had Tetris and Drugwars on my BB. But you can easily find other games and apps (paid or free).

UMA:

I tried to go to phonezoo.com from WiFi and the curve:
"Subscription Required
You are not currently subscribed to a web2go (sm) plan. Click "here" to view plans and get the entire web - right on your phone."

So it WiFi limited with tmobile?!

No it's not. Sounds like you're using the tzone/web2go browser. With wifi you want to use the normal BlackBerry browser. Make sure your browser settings are correct also:

Options>Advanced>Browser
Default browser config should be something aside from tzones/web2go

What other options do you have for browsers? My device is older so they called it tzones (which has been renamed to web2go). So I only have wifi browser or tzones browser.

options are "tzones" and "hotspot"

PhoneZoo.com works with "Hotspot", but hotspot seems like a tmobile word...or some tmobile app.

Both those are tmobile terminology. But I'm thinking your hotspot is equivalent to my wifi browser. So use that browser when you are using wifi.

For wifi you shouldn't. It's like wifi on your computer. If it's an open network, its yours!

how can i make it so both wifi and tmobile are ON...Wifi for browser and TMobile for phone services?!

I want to be able to use it like normal, but also use the browser with my wifi connection; without having to change settings, etc.

I would imagine by default your cell signal (tmob) is already turned on. All you have to do is just turn your wifi on. Cell signal will be for phone and wifi will be for internet. If you don't want UMA popping up, just make sure that under Mobile Network Options your connection preference is set to Mobile Network Only or Mobile Network Preferred.

I dont know if you mentioned it earlier but do you have BIS? If you don't have a data plan and are using wifi only, you'll have to manually check your email.
