Upgrade to 4.1.6 broke Sametime!
Please Login to Remove!
I'm running Sametime 8.0 Limited Use on Domino 8.0.1, on the same server as the BlackBerry Enterprise Server v4.1.
This has worked fine from BES version 4.1.0. up to 4.1.5, however I've just installed the latest 4.1.6 version and the Sametime server is now refusing to start.
There doesn't seem to be any Sametime console messages, however running a 'sh ta' shows a "Sametime Server Starting services" entry...... but that's it!
None of the Sametime Windows services get started either.
Anyone have any ideas?

I heard you need to seperate same time server to a different server to fix this.
they dont play nice together.

separate the services to different computers, you should run sametime in a virtual instance if hardware availability is an issue.

Hy,
go to you`re Domino Folder, and search for the Sametime Log. It`s a txt. It should be in the DATA Directory, or one Folder above. There you can read the Sametime Errors. Can you start the sametime Task in the Domino Administrator? |

No sametime.log, I don't think it even gets that far. I should mention that in trying to resolve the problem I rebuilt the whole thing! Before this, I did also look at the the existing sametime.log in trying to fix the problem, however there were no entries following the upgrade to BES 4.1.6.
Issuing a 'tell staddin quit' results in the following appearing in the console straight away:
07/28/2008 09:16:47 AM Initiating Sametime Startup
07/28/2008 09:16:47 AM Sametime Server: Termination Completed
I then wait a while followed by a 'load staddin', and nothing appears. The only sign of anything actually happening is when you do a 'sh ta' and you've got the 'Sametime Server - Starting services' entry.
None of the Sametime Windows services get started either, which I believe is one of the first things that the staddin task does.
Very odd! |

Take out BES from the NOTES.INI under "ServerTasks", bounce it and see if you can make BES 4.1.6 cleared of the accusation of being labelled the "cause"... ha! my 5 cents worth.

Also set all of the BlackBerry Windows server tasks to manual startup, bounced the server, started Domino without the BES in ServerTasks, and still Sametime refuses to start.
I'm thinking there must be some kind of TCP/IP change to the registry that the 4.1.6 upgrade makes which Sametime doesn't like, but I really haven't a Scooby where to start looking for that.
Appreciate the ideas though - keep 'em coming!

Ok once more. Open the Domino Folder, and search the whole Fodler, *.txt. One of the files you will find is the log. DodnŽt remeber whats the name but it must be a txt file. |

I shut SameTime off on my BES and built a Linux box for it. Interesting exercise - I got Domino 8.0.1 and SameTime to run on CentOS. After faking out the SameTime install to make it think CentOS is RedHat, the biggest issue was getting the address book properly replicated (I have a modified address book where the "Other" tab on a person doc has a user-modifiable photo); that apparently got handled this past weekend via standard replication processes.
The only remaining issue now is that the SameTime Messenger for BlackBerry will not connect to the new server - anyone know how to change the SameTime server name on the BB client?

Unfortunately this method would also require purchasing another Domino server license, which I can't really justify. The Sametime functionality is currently provided by the Limited Use version bundled free with the Domino server, and is just one of those 'nice to have' things rather than an essential tool for most people around here.
It would be a shame to lose it though, and I would rather try and get it up and running if all that's needed is a reg/.ini hack or something.

Ok, now it`s getting strange. Thanks for the logs, im searching IŽll post if ill find it. 
Edit: IŽll setup an test VM, and install sametime. Should take 1/2 hour.

There should be an option in the BB Manager or in the Server Settings tool. It`s called Collaboration Server or IŽll think. |

Yup - tried it, no joy. Handheld client still gets "cannot connect to server".

Have you used the fqdn name?
In Older sametime Versions you must enter the BB Server in the Trusted Servers list on Sametime. There are posts in this Forum, don`t know where exactly. |

That too - used the fqdn. Also verified that the BB server IP is listed as a trusted server to SameTime. IIRC, the initial setup of the BB client had a server name field. I'm re-deploying the client to my BB to see if that'll fix it.
