Folks,

I have a bunch of MKV files containing MPEG-4 hi-res movies. I would like to convert them to the best possible a/v format for Curve 8900.

Questions:
1. What is the best possible video format for Curve 8900? What is the best video resolution?
2. What is the best possible audio format for Curve 8900? I noticed that it can play FLAC audio files just fine.
2. What software do you use to convert MKV and other hi-res files to Curve compatible files?
3. What is the typical file size of a 2-hour movie?
4. How long does the battery normally last when watching a movie?

These are formats supported by 8900.. DivX, XviD (MPEG4 Advance Simple Profile), H.263, WMV3. I guess it depends on the way encoding has been done.. but personally I prefer DivX. The video camera supports 240 x 180 and 176 x 144. Although display is 480 x 360 but I am not sure whether video's of that resolution be supported.

Supported audio formats are: Audio Format Support: .3gp, WAV, MIDI, AMR-NB, G711u/A, GSM610, PCM, MP3, AAC/AAC+/eAAC+, WMA9/10 Standard/Pro. Of course .WAV has the max data so I am guessing it's quality will be better than MP3.

With a full battery charge you should be able to watch at least 2 movies.. but remember to reduce the brightness.

I use Handbrake and Any DVD.
I have a Bold but the settings should be similar.

I use Any DVD which runs in the system tray to trick the ripping program into thinking the DVD is not encrypted. I then use Handbrake to rip the DVD to M4V (same as MP4). I choose the iPhone settings which is the x264 engine that will encode the movie to H.264 codec. I changed the resolution (for the Bold) to 480x320 and changed the audio to Stereo not 5.1
Make sure when encoding you always choose 2-pass. You will get a much better and smaller sized video.

The results are outstanding for me with Handbrake (Speedracer quality). A DVD comes out to about 600MB ripped.

Here's the settings i use......

- avi/mp4
- DIVX
- 480x360
- 16:9 or 4:3(I prefer 16:9 then if you're converting a widescreen video/movie it won't look stretched.)
- 29.97fps
- 576 bitrate kbps
- sample freq 48000
- MP3/AAC
- Channels 2
- bitrate kbps 96/128

i lifted these settings from a member in another forum and they work a treat, i used Xilisoft ultimate video converter to make the
vids and it supports MKV.

Use either MP3 or AAC for the sound codec its really down to preference (I think AAC is smaller for with the same quality)

The size of a 2 hour movie is down to the settings used and the original file settings etc (although i prefer quality over quantity)

I have no idea how the battery copes with long movies as i've only just got round to putting vids on my BB and havent been on a longish trip yet.

^^I use Xilisoft Video converter as well but the 3.2 version.

My settings are...

Video:
-DivX/.avi
-320x240 (Still full-screen)
-23 fps
-579 bitrate kbps

Audio:
-MP3
-Stereo (2 channel)
-Sample freq 48000
-128 bitrate kbps

So far it works great. For a 170MB video file...it dropped it down to 108MB and looks and sounds good. I've done some tests on going lower on the video bitrate but the quality isn't good but it'll be around 62MB file @ 280 video bitrate.

When I find a video that I want to have on my 8900. ex; Coach Hines Game Time or Girugamesh (10 Minute Loop).

If I am taking a video straight from youtube. I'd go to Download Online Videos Save Direct Easily - Savevid.com
and then after when the link is placed and I have clicked 'download Mp4', after downloading that MP4 I would go to Media Convert - free and on line - convert and split sound, ringtones, images, docs -, and simply press browse, then find the file. It will automatically detect the file version and since it is an MP4 for some odd reason I never read the prompt message, it'll prompt you two windows, and just continue by clicking 'Ok'.

So after you have selected the video from your computer. Just scroll down abit, and then just choose the output file for the video.

Personally I use .3GP for videos on my 8900, but I don't know any other ones that work. I've tried MP4 and no use, so I just ended up using .3GP.

If you want you can also use this process for downloading songs, which is safer then LimeWire/Bearshare/etc.. But it might take abit longer to acquire your desire!

How do you make the video size 480x360? I have Xilisoft Ultimate 5.1.3, but there's no option for 480x360. Perhaps different version?

I have used Super and it works. 8900 does support playback on 480x360, although if you want to convert a 16:9 video, then you should pick 480x270. Bold, if I remember right is widescreen by default, unlike 8900.
