is edge just available in the states ? i am in the uk and dont think we get this

It is carrier dependent. Some carriers in the UK have EDGE.
Most only go to GPRS as they have some form of 3G available.

I believe its Orange that supports EDGE in the UK. But mostly bigger towns and cities.
T-mobile, you will only get GPRS and 3G.

Orange and O2 in the UK, you'll find Orange only support it in high populatoin areas, but O2's EDGE coverage is alot better.
