Default Purge Prior Calendar via IT Policy

Please Login to Remove!

Hello All,

Long time lurker, first time poster..

I tried searching for the answer but came up empty handed. My organization is in the process of rolling out BES to users and one of the issues that keeps popping up is calendar event duplication.

We (the IT Folks) know there are methods to removing prior calendar data from the device before connecting to BES/Exchange, for example BB Desktop Manager, clearing Database, secondly, Switching to Agenda view, scrolling into the future and "Delete Prior".. But for the users, these method have proven to be a bit cumbersome to the novice and or to the Mac users without the BB Desktop Manager.

This being said, is their an IT Policy within BES, we could set that would wipe the users Calendar upon Enterprise Activation, then load the Calendar with the users Exchange data? Thus avoiding duplication of event the users had on the device prior to BES activation?

Thanks in advance!

Matt

No, there isn't.

I've not heard of an IT Policy that will wipe the calender prior to activation.

Is there a reason the devices have data on them in the first place prior to the activation? Are these user's personal devices being activated on the BES?

@juwaack68 - Yes, unfortunately, my organization is "Higher Ed" thus trustworthy corporate policy doesn't apply, as in, no personal devices . That being said, my organization is currently undergoing a migration from Cyrus/IMAP email & Oracle Techtime calendar => MS Exchange 2007.

Many of the users, used an application called SyncJe by Nexthaus, which allowed them to sync their calendar from an Oracle "syncml" based server. This is why many of the users have previous calendar data on their BB as opposed to a fresh device.

Toss in a large Mac user base, lack of Desktop Manager (until RIM release), makes explaining blowing away a calendar DB a bit trying..

@penguin - No policy huh? Ugh... it hurts.

Just tell them to wipe their BB before activation to avoid duplication.

If they've been sycninc their calander and contacts manually, just make sure they sync up before they wipe so that they get everything back after activation.

Having the users wipe the device would obviously be the best and cleanest scenario, but unfortunately in the type of environment I'm in, that won't fly for some whom have customized their BB, it would be deemed as 'stopping their work flow'..

Given the above "gotcha", having them sync the data beforehand isn't really an issue, their data has already been migrated, it just they have data on the device still.

So I figured, there might be a little helpful IT Policy which would purge the calendar DB / contacts upon Ent activation. I guess I can keep dreaming.

A problem we found with duplicate calendar events, was caused by MS Exchange's "Cached Mode" being enabled on the users' Outlook 2007 clients. It wasn't a big deal in Office 2003, though. Not sure if that helps at all.

set up a station where they can come by and have you wipe just the calendar with a system that has desktop manager installed?? Long shot I know...

It sounds like none of them have to have the existing cal info. If that is the case, the agenda view then delete prior instruction is REALLY not that confusing. Just two steps really. I would stick with that if it were my users.

I once had to move over 700 users from one BES to another complete with a wipe and restore of specific data on the devices for those that wanted as we moved completely to a new BB domain due to email backend changes... long story. My users are pretty technical but still followed the lengthy instructions pretty well. Good luck

Interesting ideas..

The Agenda View/Delete Prior, is not difficult to execute, I agree. The problem comes with the users whom have infinite repeating meetings which could make the Agenda view go out 10-15 years. Essentially, a bleeding thumb of scrolling becomes the issue. :P

I actually have a ticket in with RIM, i'll see what they have to say and if that fails, I'll suck it up and document the above methods.
