Default Wifi on but Mobile Data off - Impossible ?

Please Login to Remove!

A user with a BB9000, who goes for a vacation wants to disable GPRS/EDGE/3G data when roaming, but still wants to be online using WIFI when availible.
And, he still needs to receive/make calls.

However, this seems impossible. If you turn of mobile data services the Device associates itself to the WIFI network, but TCP/IP is off - no Connection to the Blackberry network.

I cant think of a workaround - besides manually enabling mobile data when in coverage of a WIFI network.

I believe (and I'm sure I'll be corrected if I'm wrong) that in the Network section of the BlackBerry settings, disabling when roaming, only effects the cellular network, not the wifi network.

So set that, and whenever he hits a wifi zone he won't have to do anything.

You can turn off the mobile network connection and still send&receive emails and browse the web with only the wifi network. However, no mobile network = no receive/make calls.

Manage Connections > Mobile Network Options > Data Services (to OFF) will work, with caveat.

Is it an unlocked, 9000, or a branded AT&T 9000?

Unfortunately, in my testing with AT&T 9000, when you turn Data Services off, you would seemingly think that it would have no effect on the WiFi but it does. Even though WiFi can be toggled on and off independently, when Data Services is toggled to OFF, the WiFi will not pull an IP successfully, I receive errors like "IP address no longer valid" and a few others.

I personally believe this to be something to do with AT&T lock down on the Bold. Past months ago I was working with a client whom didn't purchase a data plan for his Bold, hoping to use the WiFi only. Well after countless AT&T calls, and finally an escalation to a Tier II Support, resulted in the answer that AT&T will not allow use of the WiFi unless you have a data plan. IT LOOKS like it will work, but just doesn't light up... What a pita.

Interesting new sight of the problem !

Well, in this case, if skyman84s suggestion will work in if the device uses roaming, the problem is solved for me.
That would be perfect. Easy to handle and safe.

But, if not:
If the blackberry is in its home evnironment, it does not hurt to leave the mobile dataservice on, because the data wich goes through the grps network is covered by the data plan, and, if the device is inside a known WiFi lan, it will prefer to send through Wifi.

But if you are outside your home network, it would be a good option to use wifi-only connections. - without the hassle of manually switching on and off the data services.

If I use roaming services, my personal experience is that the blackberry service is about $140 a week. Thats not the end of the world, and I prefer to be in contact with my important partners, but for people who dont want to shell out this amount, a Wifi only BB would be a good solution.
