Default Blackberry maps coming for all 4.1 devices.. soon?

Please Login to Remove!

From PDAstreet:

PDAStreet: Features: RIM Navigates New Direction with BlackBerry Maps

"PDAStreet recently got a chance to speak with RIM senior product manager David Heit to learn more about BlackBerry Maps and the company's intentions for mapping integration moving forward. "

..

"If you have a BlackBerry that runs RIM's BlackBerry OS 4.1 you'll eventually be able to download BlackBerry Maps as an add-on application. Also, devices like the 8700 series, which run OS 4.1, will be upgradeable to platform OS 4.2, the version with BlackBerry Maps that is on the BlackBerry Pearl. "

good work... release it already. =)

The discusson of scalable vector maps is very interesting. So in the end the difference between BB Maps and the others is dynamic routing and the use of vector maps. When RIM makes its vector maps available to third parties. and then you add in dynamic routing you get the best of all worlds.

hey SD

can you dumb that down a little for me or possibly point me in the right direction to learn more about what you are talking about? It sounds like the current feature set of BB maps is not as dynamic as other apps and thats what you are getting at. Correct?

thanks

Actually, it's quite simple. A vector is a mathematical equation, so the Blackberry Maps application is designed to use as little data as possible because all it recieves are 'equations' that represent the data you are viewing. When you zoom in/out it merely renders that equation on the screen, rather than re-download the data.

Use blackberry maps, and google maps, try to compare the amount of data used (in the About screen) and you'll quickly confirm this.

So, when you use the BB for navigation you won't recieve a huge data bill..

google maps.. in it's current form, would consume many megs per day if it was possible to use with a GPS (it's not possibe, as of october 2006)

There you have it.. RIM: RELEASE BBMAPS ALREADY FOR 4.1! sheesh! =)

Glad someone got to this. I am wondering if Wayfinder is using vectors cause they update pretty quick.

While vectors use less data, they can sometimes have a disadvantage of slower rendering - since vectors take more time to render than a bitmap (once decompressed and buffered from a .gif or .jpg)

I was hoping there would be enough power that this would not matter at 320x240 pixels.

Is anyone else having problems with the web link? It doesn't continue with the download after agreeing to the software license.

Try clearing your cache and trying again. I think I had the same problem but got it to work eventually.
