Default Mobipocket Reader Beta

Please Login to Remove!

Just recently installed the Mobipocket Reader Beta. It's pretty good. Not perfect, but since I was a previous user of Mobipocket and customer at Fictionwise I thought I'd try it out. I'm finally able to read books like I used to on my old Palm PDA. Anyone else try it out?

ac,

I used to read alot on my Palm as well and miss it since switching to the bb. Can you read the old palm reader books using MobiPocket or do you have to rebuy the book from MobiPocket?

I haven't actually tried that, so I don't know. I do however buy my e-books from Fictionwise, so I would think that any book that conforms to their standard format should work. So far I haven't had any problem with reading books. Only problem I have so far is that the reader seems to get a little confused about puctuation marks and has a tendency to omit them. Hopefully they'll get that fixed soon.

Yes you can read existing *.pdb books. Thank the gods, with this I think I can stop looking for the perfect phone/pda combination.

wolfie,
How did you get it to work? MobiPocket FAQ says to either rename the file or use Open with but I can't get the Palm Install tool to stop taking over except in the case of the demo book and purchased book from MobiPocket, they work fine. I have tried to uninstall Palm buth that wiped out the data in an application(SplashId) that I still use so I had to restore my computer.

Works great but it has to be a DOC file, like created by Aportis. It can't be iSolo or TomeRaider or anything else, otherwise the Palm installer detects it and adds it to the queue. I loaded a bunch and I didn't even rename them and it still worked. Hope this helps.

I've got it installed on my 7250 and it seems to work fine. It's not quite as nice as on the Pocket PC, but I can read books again on my PDA so life is good. I did send some feedback requesting bold fonts for my 40+ year old eyes.

I got it loaded on my 7290, the books I loaded are compressed and I get a message that says:
Compression not supported.

I talked to the place I got the books and he says that they work on mobipocket on other devices. Any idea how to get compression to work on the BB.

Thanks,

RS-

Send an email to [email address] and ask your compression question.

Unfortunately, as I pointed out in another post, the "Palm Reader" books are in a different encrypted format that is only compatible with their own reader software, which isn't (yet) available for the Blackberry.

To use Mobipocket, your books basically have to be either in their own format or in the old raw Palm DOC format. The good news is that you can buy books in Mobipocket format from other companies, such as FictionWise, but the bad news is that if you have a large library of Palm eReader books already (like I do), then Mobipocket won't do it for you.

See http://www.mobipocket.com/en/Support...?ArticleID=358 for more information.

Of course if you bought the books from FictionWise and they are multiformat, you can go back to your bookshelf and re-download them in the Mobipocket format. This took care of a lot of my library but the MS reader only ones. Still use my pocketpc for those.
