I've used BlackBerry e-mail on T-Mobile for years without a problem. Then I switched to AT&T for an iPhone, returned the iPhone, and switched to an AT&T Pearl. For whatever reason, I'm not getting most of my e-mail that's being forwarded to .

Overnight I received 66 e-mails to my POP account, all of which were autoforwarded to the . But only 11 showed up on the Pearl. 55 of them, admittedly spam but who knows, never made it to the handheld.

My ISP insists that there's no SPAM filtering occurring on their end. And AT&T tells me there's no SPAM filtering on their end. But somehow my Pearl is dropping e-mails.

Are there differences between the way AT&T and T-Mobile handle BlackBerry e-mail? Never had these problems on T-Mobile...

diggity, you write the 66 email received on POP account were autoforwarded, but how do you know? They were *supposed* to be forwarded, I gather, and not received at the blackberry account. How do you know they were in fact forwarded?

I would be curious about results of an experiment where you purposely send test emails to the blackberry account and how many, if any, don't make it.

Thanks for responding. You're right, I have no way of knowing for sure that the e-mails were autoforwarded. They were *supposed* to be autoforwarded.

Here's the evidence:

1. All of my e-mail is sent to one address, from which it is autoforwarded to three accounts xxx8212; a home machine, a yahoo account, and the BlackBerry. Both the home machine and the Yahoo account had all 66 e-mails. But the Pearl only showed 11.

2. The system worked perfectly for tmo.blackberry.net e-mail for several years.

3. Purposely sent e-mails to my main address autoforward properly to all three accounts, including the handheld.

Not sure what to do. Could it be that...

1. mycingular.blackberry.net is somehow filtering the incoming traffic

2. mycingular.blackberry.net is failing to forward messages to the handheld (no user-defined filters are enabled, btw)

3. my ISP is failing to autoforward (maybe three autoforwards is more than it can handle?)

Wondering if anyone has had similar issues.

I think it's AT&T

I've rejiggered my setup so that yahoo mail, which last night received all 66 e-mails, now autoforwards to the handheld. Spam filtering is turned off.

So now I get two copies of every e-mail on my handheld — one from the ISP > blackberry.net autoforward and one from the ISP > yahoo > blackberry.net autoforward.

In the past 10 minutes, I've gotten two spam e-mails at my home account.

Neither showed up on the handheld, not from ISP and not from Yahoo.

For whatever reason, blackberry.net is not forwarding certain e-mails. It's all good until you miss something you need.

diggity, it does appear your ISP account is forwarding those emails. Why would it autoforward to the others and not the cingular address? If there is a limit on the number of autoforwards, you can test that (cancel one or more of the other autoforwards for a little while and see what happens with the autoforwards to the cingular account).

Can't see why anything received on the server would not be pushed to the device.

Only other idea I have is to pick one or more of the messages that were not autoforwarded and purposely forward to the cingular account, and see what happens. This is over my head, but I can imagine there may not be a spam filter on the cingular side of it, but maybe some other kind of security going on that isn't strictly per se a spam filter.

Well, cancel suggestion to cancel some of the autoforwards.....I'd be interested to know what happens when you purposefully forward one of those messages that didn't make it to the device.

It does not show up on the handheld. That means that it fails to get from the ISP to the handheld, and it fails to get from Yahoo to the handheld.

By the way, I'm finding the Yahoo Go very handy at checking email on Yahoo account. Mucho better than the wap site. I am now using it to check email from mail lists that I have routed to folders because I don't need it sent to the BB. In your case, until you figure this out, consider using it to check for important email that might not have been forwarded to the BB. I bet, however, that you will find the legit emails are getting through.

And when I turn off autoforwarding on the Yahoo account, and reforward that spam, it DOES show up in my Yahoo POP account. So the spam made it to Yahoo...

So, not an autoforwarding problem.....and I'd call this a good thing. Kudos to cingular on this one, in my opinion.

update: Wait a minute. You say you "purposely autoforwarded." You mean, you simply forwarded it yourself, correct?

Yup.

Bottom line: there's definitely some filtering going on by Cingular. And to be honest, it's pretty reliable filtering.

But yesterday it dropped an e-mail from a friend who was sending from another mycingular.blackberry.net e-mail account.

Which is why I'd rather deal with tons of spam than miss an important e-mail that is mistakenly seen as spam.

I've switched back to T-Mobile, and the same spam filtering is taking place. So I guess it's been there all along.

Oh well. At least T-Mo is cheaper for BBerry....

Why do you set the accounts to autoforward rather than set up BIS email with carrier? I wonder if it would make a difference in the mail filtering you are seeing?

I have one e-mail account that I've had for years, and I need to access the e-mail from many places (office, home, phone). I don't see any alternative to having mail sent to the main account and then autoforwarded.

Are you suggesting that instead I use as my primary e-mail address?

No. If I understand, you have POP account set to automatically forward email to tmo (previously cingular) address. If you could instead set up BIS on the Tmo site (or do it from the BB) to fetch the email, I wonder if this would make a difference.

Yahoo email set up on BIS is virtually pushed to the BB. Other ISP email is polled about every 15 minutes.

Of course your email service has to allow it. I haven't had trouble with my personal ISPs.

I don't want to lose the immediacy of push. But you say that Yahoo pull is as instantaneous as Push?

To see what I'm talking about, open your browser on the BB and click the link to set up Internet email. You enter your email address and password and the BB server does the rest.

You're right.

Setting up as a POP account let me get every message, and it is as fast as push.

I can configure Yahoo to put a [bulk] prefix in the subject field of every suspected spam message, and configure BIS to forward those e-mails with "Level 1" notification.

That way, I can configure my profile so that mail that is suspected by Yahoo to be spam would enter the handheld without notification. Mail that is suspected by Yahoo to be legitimate would result a short vibration and the red indicator light.

Very good. Setting potential spam as Level 1 is on the unconcentional side of things, but, hey, if it's working for you that's what counts.
