POP Access > Outlook emails Marked Read
Please Login to Remove!
I posted this in general, then realized it was probably better suited for here...
Hi.
I am a new blackberry 7100t (t mobile) owner and I setup the BWC to read via POP from an exchange account I have at a host (1and1).
It works fine, but whenever the BWC queries to get email from the exchange server, my outlook client marks the message as read. I understand why it thinks it should do this as something external to exchange did pull the email, but I would like to prevent the emails from being marked read. I would like to see my unread emails as unread even though they were forwarded to my blackberry.
Does anyone know how to get around this?

You can have a contact created in AD and set your exchange server to forward all messages from your account to that contact (free BES .5).

There's a bug in a certain version of Exchange that causes messages to be marked as read even when it's requested that they're not. Typically, I can't find the version number but I know it was fixed in Exchange 2000 SP3. So if your ISP is using unpatched exchange, that may be the problem.

I have the same issue with one of my users on Exchange 2003 SP1. No more patches to apply and the BWC causes email to be marked as read. If anyone knows how to fix this it would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,
I have no problem with BES/BB devices but Treo 650 using MyMail (POP3), when the email arrives on treo, I see the status on Outlook is changed to Read. I called Rogers many times and they told me to use desktop assistance, but I don't really like it because it sync calendar and contact wirelessly and the visto server is not reliable, most of the times the status is waiting for the data.

I think it more has to do with the fact that when you retr a message number from the exchange pop3 virtual server, it marks the message as having been read in the mailbox.
I don't know if anything can be done about that. I have never really thought of having to do something like this.
cd.

Could this issue be related to Outlook Mobile Access or server active sync?

According to RIM, its just bad programming on their part. Their answer is to fork out the money for BES, or disable POP3 and enable IMAP.
I've just discovered that if you specify Outlook Web Access as the method you add the e-mail account to the BWC, it will not mark your messages as read.

I'm running Exchange 2000 with SP3 (Build 6249.4) and I'm still having this problem. Unfortuantely, I can ony use POP3 and IMAP, so I'm going to try switching to IMAP to see if that fixes the problem...

Ummm, there is no specification in the rfc standard to mark pop3 messages as read... this is an Exchange issue.

Anyone else have this problem? I am experiencing the same problem with one of my users, and am looking for a solution. I use Exchange 2003 though, so that MS hotfix does not apply.

I have TMobile's BIS accessing my Exchange account using the OWA information, not POP or IMAP which I have disabled. The email does get marked read using this method. Do you have access to OWA on the hosted server you are using?

Check these links for details about messages "being marked as read" for Exchange.

I have an exchange hosting account with asp-one, and activated thier blackberry mobile service for $19 per month. they offer BES 4.1 and everything works like a charm... BES 4.1 has really great upgrades, and it fixed the GAL problem and now syncronizes deleted and read items between Outlook and my device.

Here's the fix
BIS, at least with cingular, is attempting a pop connection first during account setup. If it successfully gets a pop connection then it goes on its way and you dont have any options for advanced configuration. So, put in a bad email address and proceed. It will then ask you how you connect to the server. Select Outlook Web Access and change to the correct credentilas and viola, you've now got an IMAP connection that will not mark your email as read!
