I just started working for a new company and they gave me a 7520 and I see it has Telenav GPS.

Can they track my whereabouts on this?

I know they track their vehicles with GPS.

I went into the "Options" menu:
Then:"Location based services"
Privacy setting says "by permission" What does this mean?

I dont like this "big brother" stuff........

Thanks for any help, I am new to this blackberry thing.

I'm pretty sure your company can track you with any GPS enabled Nextel phone, including the BlackBerry.

If you do not like it, turn it off when you are off duty and not working. While working you boss DOES have the right to know where you are. If you have nothing to hide while at work, it should not bother you.

You can set the GPS to ask you when it's tracking you. Options - Location Based Services. Set the Privacy setting to "By Permission". This sets the GPS to ask you before sending its data. There's no way around this if it's 911 calling though.

That's not true they can track you no matter what u set the LBS permission too.

There may also be an IT policy in place that sets the permission of the GPS feature so the user has no say in whether it's on or off.

That is the biggest load of crap I have ever heard! If you have done nothing wrong, then you should have EVERY reason to be bothered by your boss slapping a lojack on you! .... you started this thread and should expect different views & opinions from people as this is a public forum.

Since your company is supplying and paying for the service on the BB, they have the right to enable/disable any features they want to on their BB.

Nextel offers at least six [6] different services to track & monitor their phones thru GPS. If they have one of these services and it is enabled, you will not be able to disable it without doing some work arounds. If they are tracking you and you have it disabled, they will know from the logs.

Keep in mind .... With major companies out to protect themselves, you probally agreed to GPS by phone in some way when you signed all the employment paper work and accepted the use of the BB. I have no opinion to right or wrong here, but to me this is just like email use & website browsing policies that alot of major companys have implemented over the last few years. With these policies, they have the right to terminate for wrong use.

Is it just me or am I the only one readng more in the news about this type of occurances?

I believe TeleNav offers a service calls TeleNav Track. With the premium subscription (which includes the TeleNav GPS navigation), the company can disable you from turning off the tracking software on your BB.

That true! All phones now have the little GPS locater on them. If its on or off you still can be track by your last phone call.

You are 100% correct on your comments. It comes with the device. Companies have to protect their investment. If you don't want to be tracked give back the phone. If it bothers that much quit the possition. Just my opinion.
