Default Horrible reception lately

Please Login to Remove!

I have a 9630 on Verizon. A couple weeks ago, for no apparent reason, my signal strength has been greatly reduced. I even get no signal in many areas where I previously had signal. Other Verizon users have normal strength.

What would cause the phone to suddenly have horrible reception?

Depends on if the "other verizon users" have BB's. BB antennas are totally different from regular phones. And its possible that the EDGE Tower, in your area, may be down for repairs and the Tour is reaching out to a farther Tower.

You can use BB maps to quickly find out which tower you are currently on if it locks onto the Cell site location before GPS kicks in (can't remember if the Tour has GPS)

It could also be a Verizon cost cutting scheme. Drop a tower and boost another tower nearby to save on costs (they have to have huge banks of Golf Cart Deep Cycle Batteries as a backup if power goes down. And that's very expensive.)

If it seems you're still on the original tower, you could try upgrading the operating system. Many newer OS's have BB antennae software upgrades as each version is released.

There may be newer versions listed on this forum. These are the last three OS versions I kept track of:

Here's the latest official OS

9630/1062 Official China Telecom

Make sure to delete the Vendor.xml after downloading/installing the OS to the computer, or the OS won't install

Hey guys, at first I thought it might be a down tower in my area, but the problem exists no matter where I am. I travel quite a bit and the signal strength has been horrible everywhere.

If the antenna is loose is there a way to fix that?

I'm reluctant to think an OS upgrade would help, but who knows.

Have you called the carrier to see if there was a problem in your area? Perhaps a tower is down for maintenance?

We have two Verizon phones in our family, mine a BB 9650, hers an LG that replaced a Storm2. Both have been getting terrible reception in our neighborhood for about a month, whereas for the previous two years reception in our area has been outstanding. Other Verizon customers, most not BBs, we know, are also having reception problems. I've called Verizon twice to complain. There is no improvement. Maybe this is just solar flares, but my suspicion is that Verizon is cutting corners.

I hope the Verizon issue is resolved soon. Many people use Sprint instead and seem to not have as many problems. However, I'm sure it could happen to anyone. Of course, it would help to ensure nothing is wrong with your phone that would cause you to have poor reception.
