and the IPAQ PDA, it can also be used with other phones that are BT capable. Most likely I will use it also with my razr V3i when I use it as that functions as my weekend phone.

Thats funny, I had a razr as my weekend phone as well. I just couldn't get used to the idea of switching out my sim card every weekend.

So you can get active GPS on the 8700? I'm not familiar with this "puck".

Will the 8800's GPS be built in, a program and all like Verizons? $10 a month and you just pull up the application that ships with your phone and it starts up and gets going. Does location, voice direction, everything.

Is everyone talking about a built in GPS?

For me, it really doesn't matter.

Now if everyone is saying there will be no option for GPS, that's completely silly to have those thoughts.

Blackberry brought out the BB Maps for their 8100 and going to have it for all of their cell phones.

So why would RIM decide not to have an option for GPS?

You will have GPS or have the option for GPS.

We are talking about the function built in so that a BT puck is not needed.

Not directly - BBMaps will download new map data while you're using it, so that will count towards your data usage. Also if you had a 3rd party app that does POI lookups (I don't think BBMaps does this), you might have to pay on a per-use basis.

but as for just meandering around and seeing your position change on a map (BT Puck w/ Pearl), you don't have to pay anything additional to the HW costs (and as mentioned, data usage).

If one has the unlimited BIS or BES, then there should be no charges what so ever. The only charges that might be incured is when roaming ouside the US and if one has the unlimited BB int'l option then there will be no charges.

I'm suddenly looking forward to the BB8800 a lot less.

When I saw GPS as a feature, I was assuming it was, like other similar devices, loaded with the maps and direction software, eg from TomTom.

But the scenario I've read here is horrific.

Continually downloading maps via my data service? Unless data prices decrease dramatically in the UK, that would look make it a complete non-starter.

And no maps whenever you lose the data signal? That sounds just great. Don't drive in the mountains.

Have I read this right, it's not possible to load maps and software onto a BB?

Look at the Telmap website and Wayfinder. They seem to have the UK market, but yes that is how the BB works for now. No word from TomTom on a BB model. Garmin has one in the works but they all seem data driven. I guess we are really lucky in the US on that end.

So now we know the 8800 will have GPS, and whether you can use it this way may depend on how BT is enabled. I am not sure anyone knows at this point, but I would be surprised if that can happen, but it would be cool since you could put maps on a PPC. Why is it needed with TomTom since doesn't that have GPS. Finally I expect with the 8800 there might be development of microSD GPS apps.
