Question How to Retain Call Log / Phone History?

Please Login to Remove!

I see that there's no way to put a link to the call log on the home screen, right? And, it was somebody's idea to co-mingle calls with other sorts of messages on the Messages screen ...

So difficult to work with, imo, sigh ...

So, I see that I can bring up just the call log by first going to Messages and then pressing Alt-P. This is a pain in the neck, frankly. I miss calls throughout the day and need to quickly see what's happened. Sometimes when I'm driving; sometimes when I'm on another call, etc. etc.

Okay, enough of the rant.

HOW does one retain the call log when deleting messages? Deleting all prior removes everything, which totally shoots the call log to pieces.

I want to keep the call log, but remove everything else every day.

???

Thanks.

My call log does not go into my messages. All my calls go into the call log in the phone. Here is how you change it. Go to your phone-Blackberry button- options- call logging- set it to NONE. See if this is what you want.

Lostman Okay, I just tried this. Set it to "NONE" and then called myself. It still shows up in the Messages folder. Do I need to reset the BB or something before it'll work?

Open the Phone app, use the Menu key to go to Options > Call Logging and set it to "None". You will still get your call lists in the Phone app itself, but they won't show up in your Messages folder.

As is often the case, there is the right way to handle things like this, the wrong way, and the BlackBerry way!

Lostman Oops! It helps if you save a change when you make it! :(

Okay .. so the call log is no longer in the message folder. But now how do I just pull up a list of calls? Here's the thing: I really like to be able to thumb through the call list because sometimes I want to call someone back and didn't save the number as a contact ... or again, sometimes I just miss the call and don't realize it for quite a while. What I used to do on the Treo was just select the "missed" or "previous" call and press my phone button, which would then just dial it for me.

So .. if the call log is selected to "none," then I have no records of who called/I called, etc., right?

And if the call log is selected to either "All Calls" or "Missed Calls," then they commingle in the Message List with other messages like e-mail, etc.

And if the Message List is deleted to clear out the mess of e-mails (which are not automatically deleting when deleted from the message server), then I lose my call log?

OH! I just found Call History ... it's cumbersome in that one must highlight a date/time in order to see what the happened. So ... in a given time period, I might have 2-3 answered calls, plus 2-3 missed calls, plus a couple that might've gone to voice mail. But I won't know that unless I highlight each date/time in the list individually. No easy way to just glance and say "Oh, I missed a call from hubby, better call him"

I guess I'm looking for the sort of basic phone task that's been on every mobile phone I've ever used. So far, this is a bit screwy ........ Yikes!

Rambo: the phone app only shows the last call, not an entire list?

you press the green call button.
it will show in the order of last call:
who you've called
who has called you
any missed calls.

Yes, to see what specific time, you need to do as you've mentioned.
But just to glance at who has called/who you've missed
just press the green call button.

Midnightdraven ... Sigh, I wish it were so. All I see is the last call. Not a list of calls.

If you get 10 calls from "home" and a call from "work" in between
It will show

home

then

work
home

then

home
work.

it doesnt list like this:

home
home
home
work
home
home

because they are from the same person, it lists the last call
to see the time they call, you need to do menu - history

its just the way the BB works.

You can try to boot the phone. But they should not be going there? The old calls that you didn't delete should be there but the new should not go.

Midnight Draven (cool name!)

So ... I just tried this several times ... called myself from my hubby's cell a couple of times, and from the house phone. In the middle, I got a call from a client, which I took.

When I press the green phone button I see:

ONE call from house phone
ONE call from client

that's it.

I must've made 4-5 calls from a combination of the other cell number and from the house phone. but only one call shows up on the list.

If I go to Call history, however, they're all there if I thumb through them.

???

(My BB doesn't seem to work like your BB. Apparently it needs lessons)

No thats what it will show.

Like i said, it WILL NOT list them like this:
home
home
home
work
client
home

it will show that you have had a call from home
you then need to go menu - call history to see the list of how many calls
and what time they happened.

its what you could call a "condensed" list.

OH! (duh) ... got it. Since the house phone and the cell phone are both part of the same contact record, it only shows one call, right?

And Call History only shows the history for one contact, not for all of the calls.

Okay ... so back to my basic problem --

What I really want is the Call Log. The whole thing. And I "really" want a way to quickly access it from the Home screen, or by pressing the green phone button. And I don't want it to clear (be deleted) every time messages are deleted. I want it to stay until I manually choose to clear the Call Log independent of other types of messages.

(geez, I sound whiny)

But that's what I really want ... (and it's all about me! lol)

So ... can I do this?

Right, if you clear the main MESSAGES list, which has emails and possibly sms messages it will NOT delete call log.
to view call log (when set in the options as mentioned before)
you would go
messages
menu - view folder
phone call logs

UNLESS you delete them WITHIN that folder
they remain and are NOT deleted when you delete messages in the main view of the MESSAGES folder.

There is a cool app called BB Alerts that will list the calls for you also it will remind you that you missed a call or a text. It will beep every minute or to what ever you set it for. They have a free trial if you want to play with it. Other wise you will have to click the number to see how many times they called. Well good luck.

No because it's part of your phone. But you can put the BB alert on your home screen. Also this program has to be down loaded to your computer and you load it with your BB-desktop. Not hard just wanted to give you a heads up on that part.

I may be off-base; forgive me if I am...

Your initial post seems to hint at the ability to view your Call Logs separately from the SMS/MMS/E-Mail messages. If so, you can go into your Messages Folder> BB Button> Options> General Options> Set SMS and Email Inboxes to Separate.

You will then see only Call History in the Messages folder and your SMS/MMS in a separate folder that will appear on your Homescreen once this option is selected. Likewise, your e-mail messages will then be forced to go into the individual folders (depending on how many e-mail accounts you have.) It adds more icons to your homescreen, but helpful in keeping things separate.

I, of course, have everything crammed into one folder. Easier to access for my needs.

Again, if this in not what you were looking for, I apologize for adding my $.02

Setting SMS and email inboxes seperate does indeed seperate SMS.
but email will STILL go into the messages folder.

they appear in their individual message folders already, but are also seen in the messages icon.

thats why you hide the individual email icon and use the messages icon.
