Default BES 3.6 - uninstalled MSDE - what do I do??

Please Login to Remove!

Hey everyone!

I removed ISA 2000 from a machine that was also running BES 3.6, and accidentally removed MSDE as well.

Now the BES is endlessly complaining that it cannot connect to the database and I cannot run BES Administrator. However, all user's Blackberries are working fine luckily.

Does anyone have any ideas how to proceed with this?

I did try creating a new MSDE instance called BESMgnt but to no avail.

Any help appreciated!

Hopefully you have a backup of the database?????

If so, you should just need to reinstall MSDE, restore the database and create the appropriate accounts and permission them accordingly.

Thanks for your reply! Unfortunately there is no backup of the database. Am I right in thinking the only way around this is to reinstall BES, and possibly add all users again?

Only issue with that is that I'm not sure we have the SRP key or BES licenses anywhere....

Owch... No backup == bad!

You're going to have to re-create the DB, and start over pretty much from scratch

That reminds me to go run a few backups....

heh ... conveniently 3.6 doesn't use the database all that heavily. In fact when you upgrade from 3.6 to 4.x you can all out trash the database if you don't need to worry about any IT Policy info and you have your licenses backed up.

I'd recommend giving TSupport a call, just so you get a complete solution and have someone hand-holding.

But if you wanted to fiddle around, you could use the createdb command to create a shell database and point the BES to that database. Personally ... I'd plan an upgrade to 4.1 SP4 and have it create a new database. Once you get to 4.x though ... please make sure you do some backups

What's the syntax of the createDB command?

Thanks for your help everyone!

also - how do you extract the SRP ID/key and CAL keys?

Thanks!

I found this folder on the server. Is this actual data? Or is this blank after I tried to create a new MSDE instance?

You are missing BESMgmt.mdf and BESMgmt.ldf so the database is gone.

All you have to do is reinstall MSDE, create new BESMgmt database via createdb.exe. When you open the MMC for the first time you will have to (re)enter you CAL's, once in the MMC right click and select "New BlackBerry Server..."

Enter the same BES Instance Name as before (this can be checked via Services - look for BlackBerry Enterprise Server - NAME or the registry HKLM\Software\RIM\BES\NAME)

Enter the same SRP and Auth key and use the same BES Admin mailbox as before.

Your users will then appear in the console. If they don't you didn't type the name in correctly.

createdb syntax and config file options can be found on KB03640 - Upgrade a remote BlackBerry Enterprise Server Management database

To import / export license keys check out KB03300 - Export and import BlackBerry Enterprise Server license keys from a command prompt

I found them in a different folder (see attached).

Now how do I use that data to recreate the database?

Thanks!

Only other way I know is to call whomever you purchased the keys from and have them check their records.

You could re-attach them to the MSDE instance ... How to manage the SQL Server Desktop Engine (MSDE 2000) or SQL Server 2005 Express Edition by using the osql utility

I still think you'd be better off upgrading to 4.x and having it re-create a database for you that way.

I tried entering the following 3 commands into osql, as 1, 2, 3, and then all together separated by commas like so:

EXEC sp_attach_db @dbname = N'BESmgmt', @filename1 = N'C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL\Data\BESMgmt.mdf', @filename2 = N'C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL\Data\BESMgmtlog.ldf'

and absolutely NOTHING happened. It just went to the next numbered line. Bes Management still doesn't run.

Please help!!

Guys, any further suggestions here?

The user CALs are not recorded anywhere, so any way I can reconnect these files to MSDE and then get BES using this would be awesome.

Thanks

It sounds like the command didn't get entered properly.

Try this ....

Download MSDE Manager and attach the DB using this; it'll give you real feedback about attaching the database. The GUI is much nicer than dealing with osql unless you're familiar with osql.
