Thanks so much for that information.

Is this incompatibility issue published anywhere by RIM so I can have something verifiable for folks who would be asking me about such matters?

Yes, I am uneducated about the nuances of Windows Mobile, but I know if we had an alternative to "no resolution time frame currently available" we would take it.

Any real innovative workarounds out there? 3rd party attachment services that does support the new file format?

That's what you get for trying to be on the bleeding edge.

Most corporations are 1-2 years away from Office 2007. The larger the corporation, the longer the time frame.

You need time to test for :
1) compatibility with other business apps.
2) compatibility with 3rd party service like BB
3) compatibility with existing Office macros
4) re-certification of LOB documents to SOX if applicable
5) aquiring budget
6) designing and executing a deployment and training plan that will not overwhelm your IT resources and keep your users productive

I only have 100 users, and i'm looking at late 2008 before I even begin to look at item 1.

You're talking to the wrong people..I have it confirmed in a post WES email exchange by a RIM tech that it's in SP4...

Jeez

I'll assume you're not just flaming for the sake of it...

If you read the RIM documentation you'll get a list of the file formats that it supports native attachment opening..which includes .doc and .xls (and more), no where does it say that it supports .docx and xlsz. How much more verification do you need.

This is such a non-issue, I'm pretty sure that SP4 will be out 'soon' (I'll try to get more of an idea next week) and as LadyDI say I don't know of ANY of my enterprise customers that have rolled out Office '07 beyond a limited beta trial..

Didn't mean to flame - but let's not digress.

I guess I've been drinking the Microsoft Kool-Aid. Exchange and BES installed by an outside firm, I'm a one-man IT department relying on others to help. The 2007 thing is also driven by Sharepoint 2007, but don't get me started.

I don't think the root issue is .docx file extension - it doesn't work with .doc either.

So let's focus on the solution - SP4, huh? I'd love to know when that was going to actually be available.

In the meantime, I may try to install Word 2003 to see how that co-exists with Office 2007. I'm sure I'll hear about that. Any other constructive comments, I'm all ears.

In a few days, BES will also publically support Office 2007 attachments; for those who can get it now through documented steps posted here, it's already available.

Default Thanks for follow-up

Thank you for that follow-up.

I'm not sure what those 'documented steps' are, but I think the guy who did my BES has access to official channels.

By the way, Office 2003 and Office 2007 don't seem to play too well together.

Each time one or the other runs, it has to run through a complete Setup step.

I look forward to the results of your testing.

Office 2007 Documents (XML) are supported on BES 4.1.4. I have installed in my production enviornment and tested opening .xlsx and .docx files and was able to open them on my BB.

On the RIM website they don't have the 4.1.4 to download. Where would I find it?

Well that is not entirely true. I upgraded to 4.1.4 by downloading the BES Express Install file. Bes Express use the same files your license determines which edition to install. So if you have Enterprise edition installed downloading the BES Express file will upgrade your enterprise BES to 4.1.4.

hack-a-doodle-doo

While it may work, probably not the best thing to do if you want support.

MORE INFO:DOCX opens on 8800, but not 7105 running 4.1.0.309

Installed 4.1 SP4 yesterday. Now handheld recognizes the Office 2007 attachments. However, when I open attachment (word doc), content is blank.

Is anyone aware of any post-SP configuration I need to do?

I used the "test attachment server" function under the BB server config tool, and it rendered the text from a 2007 DOCX correctly. Now I just have to figure how to make it show on the device

I suspect you need to upgrade the BB to 4.2 OS. I doubt 4.1 supports DOCX

7100 upgraded to 4.1.0.377 also not able to display contents of DOCX

Is anyone aware of documentation indicating that handheld OS must be 4.2 or greater for this functionality?

Thanks

Jim
