Exactly, I can see the same issue here. For managing WM devices you must have either Exchange 2007 SP1 - then it's ok to lock down the devices.
But for other devices, like iPhone ... it will be a problem.

Actually, with the iPhone 2.0 software coming with the SDK, Apple is providing full activesync support as well as admin software so you can lock it down and do remote wipes as well.

We don't allow personal BBs, but we have allowed contractor provided BBs. Basically, the contractor pays for a license, the service, and the BB. Once on the BES all becomes property of the the govt. It's not my favorite setup, but it's what I have.

Full ActiveSync support isn't much .. I'm in the Beta 2.0 and it's improved and comparable to a Windows Mobile 6 device, but is that saying much? The remote wipe works perfectly. Incorrect password does not. They need to fix it so the device self deletes after X number of wrong attempts.

Has it been made clear what the enterprise backend for that solution will cost? I'm hoping Apple doesn't expect that you will need OS X Server to manage this component...

What I know:

You need to deploy Itunes or have a central PC/Mac to activate as Itunes is *required* for activation.

They do have a Iphone Configuration Utility but it's OS X at the moment.

From a deployment / administration side this is ugly compared to living in the BES 4.1 world with OTA activation and BES policy.

RIM has a new "division" they created and are looking for Iphone developers. I'm betting you will see a Blackberry Connect client for Iphone not too far away

I'll be the first to say I'm a huge Apple fan; all of my remote work is done off my MacBook but I'll also be the first to say that asking a Windows-based shop to justify the cost of yet another server just to support the iPhone would be a hard sell especially if a BES infrastructure is already in place.

Hey .. Mac fan here too .. user since the IIe - my current G5.

There is no seperate server for this, just not as easy to administrate as blackberry currently is. For some companies the 2.0 update will provide what they need, for us we need a little more control than basic ActiveSync policy. It meets the basic security requirements of our Security group but we won't be procuring iphones with the current price, administration involved.

I do and I am also the BES admin for the company I work for which is a financial institution who assigns me an 8830. I understand that due to the nature of the information that is stored on the device and the security requirements that are a must in this industry that my work issued blackberry needs to be locked down for everyone including me.

I just went out and bought my own pearl for personal use so I can install software, use IM, facebook and anything else I want to do on the device. No sensitive data is on my personal one so if it gets lost or stolen, no big deal. It is insured.

So i have 2 blackberry devices on me at all times with one on company bes and one using BIS.

I don't have 2 BB's, but I do use two phones. I have an 8830 for work, and use an HTC Touch as my personal phone.

Our company allows our employees to purchase their own Blackberries and we add them to the BES. Cancundan has the same idea we have, they must agree to how we do things and if/when they leave, we nuke their BB. Simple really.

Also, we don't pay for CAL's with our current contract so that one major obstacle we don't have to deal with.

weve allowed personal bbs on the bes for a few years now and are now revoking that. does anyone know of a way to wipe only the mail from a handheld?

its looking like we will need to remote to the users pc install desktop mgr and config, backup the handheld, wipe it, then restore non corp data

a nightmare

We had a user leave on good term, but did not wipe the BB.
Just deleted from BES and left it that way.

There is only the backup/restore method, but what if they keep the backup data.
You will have to shred the backup file when done as well.

How many users do you have to NUKE?

.

I hope you do not work for a publicly traded company. I hate bringing up the legal stuff in the BES admin Corner, but.....

For publicly traded companies, part of the SOX compliance is showing that there is a process to control and protect all corporate data. Email is considered corporate data, so its technically a SOX violation if you allow an employee to leave without wiping their device. (I'm not a SOX expert, but this is my understanding)

This is why security teams are screaming to keep the personal devices off the corporate BES and why companies make employees sign the 'you can wipe my device when I leave" waiver.
