I have a blackberry curve 8520 on T-mobile UK, and I am planning to travel to Orlando Florida for holiday in July, and i was wondering what i have to do for it to work in The USA ??

Please any help/advise will help!!

Make sure that you have an international voice and data plan. otherwise you will spend a small fortune in voice and data charges.

Thank you but I failed to mention i'm on pay as you go/pre pay so is the answer the same or different ?

Check with your carrier. The roaming charges may be very high.

The States are Zone 4 for tmob UK. £1.20 per minute for voice. You're getting charged both ways either calling or receiving (remember you're roaming).
Receiving can be reduced to 50p a minute if you subscribe to the international option (£2.50 a month on contracts, no clue about PAYG)

BB access is 0.73p per Kb and if you're lucky enough to camp on a 3G network it rounds up nicely to £7.50 per Mb.

Want some advice from a fellow londoner? Either get a short term contract for 30 days that cover the duration of your holiday or drop the BB in the room's safebox and forget about it. PAYG charges are pretty much ridiculous even when home. They become suicidal when roaming (especially Zone4)

The above link would demonstrate that even a rather conservative use of 60 mins calling out, 60 mins in, 20 texts and 10 mms would add up to £154 in roaming charges. And we haven't even touched data or BB access at all. Ridiculous. Get a short term contract, subscribe to the international option.

its expensive and i'm off to orlando in 2 weeks so cant want and this time taking my bb but not going to use the data service but when i got my phone they told me i had to pay £100 upfront to use it in usa and then when i come back i get it back... how odd i thought but i will need to look into it more now i could tell you more about it when i find out if you want to

You're either young with no credit history or you have a history of adverse credit in your file. These are the only reasons operators in the UK would ask for a deposit for activating international roaming.

they told me it was standard and im not that young and i do have a credit history which is good so ... but t-mobile told me its a standard charge for any customer and told the one after me who was about 50 years old the same so its not just me

It's not standard. What is standard is telling people it's standard since everybody gets annoyed when rejected or required to pay deposits in order to gain access to credit facilities.
When any UK carrier asks for deposits it's either not enough credit data or adverse data. Doesn't need to be a CCJ, a past late payment may trigger it, current change of address, CIFA entries, the works. It's risk assessment 101 and a rather plain hunting algorithm that scores your eligibility. No need to get upset, give the CRA 2 quid, get your reports and fix what's wrong.
