i hit "c" , choose a contact and it composes based on the last type of communication i used. so if i just texted someone then it goes to text, just emailed...it goes to email. to chase, like wiseass said i just hit escape, menu and choose sms.

I do wish RIM would incorporate the feature of Symbian S60 where pushing the phone Send button while a composed message is on the screen actually sends it. It is a pretty slick shortcut.

I haven't used my 8830 in eons, but it seems to me that it remembered the most recent type of communication used for each contact.

On my Storm, it offers all types of messaging for all contacts, regardless of most recent type.

Also if you use Vlingo you can just push the button and say "text" and the contact first name.

ShortcutMe allows you to create 52 shortcuts of your own. They will be available to you from anywhere and not just from the Home Page.

In addition you can assign 9 applications with input parameters to convenience keys and ENTER key.
One simple example: Double click the convenience key (anytime and from anywhere) to call or send a SMS/PIN/EMAIL to someone. Triple click the same conv. key to lock your BB. Click the same key 4 times to turn your BB into a Flash Light.

ShortcutMe is available both on BlackBerry App World and MobiHand.

I got four words: Texting is a rip-off. If I had to choose between an unlimited texting plan and a data plan, I'd go with the data plan because it offers me more versatility for not much more. I got so sick of being charged 20 cents per message that I had texting blocked as soon as that option became available to me, got a BlackBerry with a data plan, and never looked back. Seriously?! 20 cents for a 140-character message embedded in the control message to the tower?! Texting is NOT the ideal form of communication.

As two others have posted above, QuickText is the way to go.

Hit "Q", choose a contact (scroll or hit a shortcut key) and that's it. Automatically uses the mobile number when you initially create the contact shortcut (none of this "work, home or mobile" stuff -- like who is going to send an SMS to a contact's work number...?).

In my personal opinion, you are dead wrong. SMS is one of the best and quickest ways to communicate.

Add an SMS plan to your account and then you won't be charged per message.

x2. Plus, my cousin and my mom are the other only ones that I know with a BB. I could send my other contacts emails, but they may or may not get them until hours after I send it.

That said, I do ask people if they have a SMS plan before texting, as I'd hate to run up their bill after being the recipient of a ridiculously hefty one once.

I put qSMS on my Pearl Flip but it doesn't work and I think its because of the SureType keypad. If I click the app, though, it immediately begins a new SMS so I just set it to one of my convenience keys. Noice!!! Thanks.

Cool New Users

I'm afraid the 'old guard' Blackberry user has got to get used to the idea of a new type of Blackberry user. I recently bought a Bold, setting aside my Nokia e71, because I wanted the better messaging capabilities in general. I text from my device way more than I email, and like the keyboard for that, as the keyboard on the Bold is quite a bit better than the keyboard on the e71. I do read email, do have business email coming to this device, and do use pretty much every method of communication this thing can do.

However, what is enabling the new type of user that does the sms lots more is the new video capabilities and general coolness factor of the Bold and the Storm. Sure, both are sort of love it or hate it, but then so's the iPhone. The wife has an iPhone, I have a Bold. I also have an iPod Touch, so I know a thing or two about that class of device, and if you text a lot, it's not for you. As a matter of fact, the Palm OS Treos are nearly the best texting devices available due to their default sms chat and usable keyboards.

Anyway, to wind up my ramble, the Blackberry is now able to do lots more than just email. Many of the other things it does it does surprisingly well, well enough that a whole new class of Blackberry owners will be hanging around, many like me who didn't actually buy the thing to do mobile email.

And, thanks for the qsms link; I started reading this thread specifically to find a quick way to sms. Now, if someone would just write an sms chat app...

Still think quicktext and beyond160 are the way to go. See my site for links.

Glad to see someone has some sense around here. I see the same type of reactions on all the BB forums I read. Blackberrys are no longer just for business users. People want to use them for games and media and everything else. Everyone says that iPhone users are elitists, but I see it more from the 'old guard' blackberry users then I do from iPhone users.

To answer your question, there is no direct shortcut, but with a few clicks you can be composing a text to
Hit C type the first few letters of the person you want to text, hit menu and choose Text. Done.

BBs are also so much more than email. Sure it was originally the main purpose of it, but now its my mp3 player, GPS, newspaper, video player, calendar, alarm clock etc. If youre JUST using email, then your analogy is correct.

This guy didnt have any attitude at all, the first, second, third replies were people getting on him for not wanting to use email.

Some people need to pull the battery, and get outside with some fresh air for the afternoon.

Ps: Wheres the bud at?
