I'm curious as to why you didn't link to this keyboard. They actually list the models of BBs that the keyboard will work with.

I did link to the keyboard. There are a bunch of keyboard links in one of the threads in the Bluetooth forum.

I know BlackBerryForums sponsors are getting ready to carry this keyboard, so I want to link to them...

Let me know when you get a response from them. It's the weekend at the moment, so I'm sure a response will arrive Monday.

When I write the Bluetooth keyboard review, I will list the BlackBerryForums sponsor vendors at the bottom of the review (At the present moment, this would be SmartPhoneDepot and eAccess).

I just purchased the Bluetooth Keyboard by Freedom Keyboard. I have downloaded the driver from their website. I double click and go through the installation, but when I go into the RIM Application Loader there is nothing there regarding the "Bluetooth Keyboard". What am I doing wrong? I am using desktop managaer 3.6.2.9 for a Blackberry 7100.

Thank you in advance for your help.

The files you want to load to your Blackberry are located in C:\Program Files\Bluetooth Keyboard

Thanks for the quick response. When I get to the application selection and click add, I went to C:\Program Files\Bluetooth Keyboard. However, when I click on the file and then "open". I get an error message: "No additional applications designed for your handheld were found." Do you know what this means?

In this case I would recommend you to install the cod file using javaloader.exe (that is the way I installed the Freedominput BB Keyboard drivers), as the error message can have different reasons (typing mistake in the alx, missing firmware package on your pc etc.). You could try to install the firmware package that your handheld is running on to your pc and retry to load the file using Desktop Manager.

If the file you donloaded has no file extension, rename it to .exe. Than execute and goto app loader. You should see the driver there ready to be loaded.

Default freedom keyboard and BES

installation instructions don't mention Blackberry Enterprise Server.
Are there instructions for BES 4.0?

There is no BES connectivity required to use the keyboard.

I just received my keyboard from My Mobile Gear. I finall got someone to get back to me and they agreed to sell me the keyboard for 7100g for $99.00 if I would beta test it for them. so far I like it does what a keyboard should do.

I got it working. Remarkably, I can even control everything (I can even multitask via holding ALT+LeftArrow) without ever touching the BlackBerry. Didn't think RIM would have allowed a driver to dig that deeply into the BlackBerryOS, but RIM did. Or somehow Freedom Keyboard got a really privelaged cryptographic key (something beyond the $100 signing key).

I am currently testing out this keyboard on a BlackBerry 7250 at the moment, and am writing a review for next week. Right now I am trying to troubleshoot the slow speed of the keyboard - basically as a fast typist I can quickly type two sentences and then turn off and fold the keyboard, and the BlackBerry would still be slowly displaying keys one keys at a time halfway between the two sentences.

Probably something that they can fix with a new driver revision (I tried adjusting repeat rate and delay both to minimums and maximums. That only affects things if I am holding a key down .... not for continuous typing)

When you bang the keys on the keyboard quickly, does it lag on your specific model? Which model? Which operating system?

Also, is there a way to make the left/right arrow keys behave like Alt+scrollwheel for left/right cursor movement instead of Back/Click? I'd like to reassign the back button to another key, and the thumbwheel click to another key (such as the target logo key).

I'll contact Freedom Keyboard about this -- Nothing a driver update can't fix -- I'd like to clear this up before I begin writing my review! ;)

Also, some key assignment issues should be fixed:

(1) Left and Right arrow should be reassigned to Alt+Trackwheel.
That will enable left and right cursor movements while editing an email
(up,down,left,right would work properly).
(Alternatively, make custom key assignment possible)

(2) Thumbwheel click can be assigned to the target-logo key (usually hitting Enter
behaves the same as a thumbwheel click anyway, most people will just intuitively use
that and everything would work fine). The target logo conveniently looks like a wheel,
which reminds people of a trackwheel. So naturally, pressing the target logo could
make it behave like a thumbwheel click.
(Alternatively, make custom key assignment possible)

(3) The Esc key (Back) can be reassigned to the house-logo key, after the left/right
arrow keys are reassigned to cursor movement left/right (same as Alt+Trackwheel up/down)
(Alternatively, make custom key assignment possible)

(4) Delete key on Freedom Keyboard currently does nothing.
This should behave the same as Alt+Backspace on an actual BlackBerry, delete current
character under the cursor (like the PC's "Del" key when editing on a desktop computer)

(5) Holding Alt+backspace should behave the same as Alt+backspace.
Currently it does nothing. It should act as a "Delete" key (rather than backspace)

(6) I know the BlackBerry character set has the cdecil character (Ç) but pressing Alt-F
for that character doesn't work.

(7) There should be a keypress to simulate SYM. This could be done via assigning it to
the TAB key.

Would it be possible to update the keyboard driver to fix these shortcomings? Especially the performance issue?

By the way, here's a good reason to have the left/right behave properly as cursor movement keys instead of Esc/Click presses:

I've been play around with this one from My Mobile Gear and I do some good and bad features in the driver. first off the bad - I don't see any programmable features like key assignments. but it does have preprogrammed function keys that launch email, notes, contacts, and task applications. I'll have to ask My Mobile Gear about programming keys for other apps. I'm sure they can add it to their driver.

Now for the good - I like that way they simulated or emulated not sure what the term is but the way they implemented the trackwheel. Up/Down Arrow scrolls up/down text lines and Left/Right Arrow moves cursor left or right. There is a key next to the left arrow that simulates the trackwheel push for select so this is perfect for navigating around the icons and while in a document or application. keyboard input seems fine. I'm not a fast typer but if I increase the key delay I can better play the brickbreaker game because the cursor seems to move faster or slower depending on what the key delay rate is. "pretty cool".

I'll keep you posted on my use of this keyboard. but so far I can see that my life will be much easier responding to emails.

Mark,

it seems like the Freedom keyboard miss a lot of the basic functions compaired to the one from My Mobile Gear. Is Freedom keyboard really ready for sale?
