You need to download the client to your 8700. If you have a Bluetooth GPS paired with your Blackberry, the software detects it right away and start using it. You then use the client to see your location on a map, find places (POIs), Map directions, etc etc. I think the concept is very similar to Telenav... There are no maps on your device, they are downloaded on your device as you go. As I said in my previous post, I used the software to go to work and back and the voice prompt were as accurate if not more then my Garmin Quest GPS.
Not sure what you mean by your last question "What exactly does the software do on the PC vs the 8700?" If you are referring the web interface "MyWayfinder.com"? The site gives you the ability to select favourites, prepare routes, etc... When you start the client on the Blackberry it synchronise the favourites on the device as well.
