Default Pearl Hosed - JVM Error 547 flash write failed.

Please Login to Remove!

Got the Pearl Sept 12th and love it but its no longer working. Removing the battery and restarting continues to bring up this error:

" JVM Error 547 flash write failed. Scroll for available commands".

It then proceeds to give me a tons of troubleshooting options, view java stack, etc, etc. Just jumped through multiple levels of support and had someone that sounded like they knew stuff tell me to reload the phone sw using desktop manager and the app loader option. He checked my desktop manager version and said it is correct. Tried that but the app loader says it doesnt recognize the device so thats a no go. Guess I gotta jump through the hoops and try to get someone again - maybe head to store and get a replacement. This really sucks. Moved to the 8100 from a Nokia 3650.

Search for and download JL_CMDR on this forum; it contains a utility to completely wipe out and reformat the BB.

Then download the handheld OS from T-Mobile at BlackBerry Upgrade

Install the downloaded program.

Start Desktop Manager and the BB should reload.

I hope you had a backup of your data...

Good luck.

NJBlackberry,

Thank you for your reply. I'm downloading the s/w right now and I'm going to give it a try. Will advise on outcome. -Thanks

Default Clearly not ready for prime time

Its unacceptable that people should be forced to go through all this effort just to have a working device.

I tried 2 8100's in the store yesterday and both had problems. One was stuck in a perpetual hour glass spin, the other took a significant amount of time switching between apps. (several minutes) and doing smple tasks like theme changing (which only takes seconds on the 8700 and 7130)

The 8100 will be an extremely compelling platform when they get all the kinks worked out - but for now RIM is using the market as little more than an extension of their quality assurance process.

Sorry you've had a bad experience. What you are describing is what happens when every new model on any PDA comes out. FLash the Q in order to get this functionality. Upgrade the MDA in order to get e-mail to work. You don't know why yours, or the original posters, BB failed.

Mine has no problems at all..

NJBlackberry,

Well things were looking pretty good. I downloaded and ran JL_CMDR, used the wipe menu option, downloaded and installed the SW from tmobile for the 8100 which seemed to go smoothly (it showed it erasing, loading java apps, etc). and it completed. I hit finish on the desktop when it appeared and felt pretty good. However it seems the phone is now caught in a reboot loop of some kind which just shows a spinning hourglass. It seems to turn off, flash its red light, and come back on with the spinning hourglass. It will keep doing this...

NJBlackberry,

Quick followup as I left out a step I did in my msg above. After the new 8100 SW loaded that I downloaded from the tmobile site, I went into the app loader in desktop manager and clicked everything and its proceeded and appeared to finish ok. After that was completed it when the phone seemed to attempt to reboot and is now stuck in the 'perpetual hourglass' which someone else just referred too.

Take the battery out and leave it out.

Run through application loader. It will fail when trying to connect to the BlackBerry.

Put the battery back in. You should see a JVM 507 error

Run through application loader again and see what happens.

mischief007,

I just gave it a try and it definately made a difference initially. Running the app loader without the battery in the phone seemed to allow the app loader to connect to the phone and get past the hourglass issue and allowed the app loader to clear everything ok and reload just as you mentioned in your message above. Only this time I didn't check all the boxes and just left the few default checkboxes checked for good measure.

Right after the load completed I had high hopes. But its gone right back to the spinning hourglass. :(

How long has the hourglass been spinning? On other BBs, that could last up to 20 minutes.

Well as I was typing my response above, the phone was spinning away as before and I figured I'd just let it burn itself out at this point Lo and behold, I look down at it and its got an error # 543 on the screen which has now replaced the hourglass issue. Removing the battery and putting it back in does indeed now bring up this error #543 consistently. In some perverted way I'm thinking this is progress ;)

Off I go to search for error 543...

NJBlackberry,

Yes you are correct. I didn't realize the hourglass could take that long but it must of been 10 minutes or so. I found references to error 543 so I've gone ahead and used the tool to do a wipe and another reload. This time with the battery in since it seems to be working ok with the battery in.

Here is the ah ha though. Using the javaloader interface before, the options 1 and 2 seemed to connect to the device (ie I didnt see a cant connect error or anything) but they brought up a blank screen without data. This was when I had the original error and I got the same response with the spinning hourglass. _Now however_, with the 543 error on the screen, the javaloader options 1 and 2 actually return data. Perhaps the wipe wasn't actually working right before? Interesting, we'll see when this app loader process finishes this time.

It finished and its back to Error #543. I'm at a loss now since everything I've read seems to indicate reloading the SW should fix an error 543. Well either way I'd like to thank everyone for their ideas and assistance up to this point. I'm going to take a break for a couple hours. I'm glad I didn't sell my nokia 3650 on craigslist yet, it came right up when I put the sim card in so at least I have a phone for the weekend.

Looks like a bad 8100. I recommend an exchange at the nearest TMO store.

Default HW issue likely

I second the motion. Return the thing and get a replacement. I have had mine working flawlessly since the 12th, with only one kwown java app bug.

Sometimes I wonder if these stores keep recycling the phones when they have no stock..

They sure did this with Treos. Any return was first replaced by someone else's return, supposedly "re-manufactured", but often you got someone else's problems in exchange for yours.

If the repair techs could get a returned Treo to work normally just once, they put it in the pile to be offered as exchange units. I've heard 1st hand stories of guys getting their second or third replacement and recognizing thier original Treo having been given back to them.

Hey All,

As a followup, I went to the store where I bought the phone and they replaced it, no charge. Just a heads up, they usually charge a $25 restocking fee if you've thrown out the box so keep it handy ;) I never buy insurance on these items but asked about it. I believe its $5.99/mo PLUS a $110 deductible. I was considering it at $5.99/mo until I found out about the deductible too! Wow.

Rep mentioned they've never seen a phone as good a seller as this one and that I'm the 1st problem return they've had.

Anyhow, thanks to all for your replies and assistance - its much appreciated. I'm going to hold off on any Berry411, etc installs for a couple weeks to be safe.

Default Help Please !! JVM Error 547

Hi all,
I just bought the Pearl at HK CSL and since I bought it without plan they told me it's not going to be under warranty. But suddenly after using it for a day, (i forgot whether i was installing something), the device got messed up. Now, it keeps turning on and off (goes white with hour glass and red led blinking). At some point it stopped and showed JVM Error 547.

I tried using JSL_CMDR to wipe out and install the new handheld software from HK CSL but didn't succeed.

Can somebody help me please ?

Hahahaha, it must have been a joke. EVERY product sold by a shop MUST have a warranty.
