In holster and out of holster are how the Blackberry reacts when in or out of the holster. For example you can tell the Blackberry to vibrate when receiving a call in the holster and ring when receivng a call out of the holster.

These settings only work if you have a holster with the sleep function. If it does not, then "in holster" settings will not take effect and "out of holster" settings will always be active.

sleep function essentially works like stand-by mode. The phone becomes dormant and only "awakes" when an imcoming message or phone call comes through. It preserves battery life as well. correct me if im wrong people

"Sleep function" is what state your BB device is in when in the holster with the magnet. The magnet puts the device to "sleep". Setting your device aside OUT OF THE HOLSTER does not put the device to sleep. As diginxy stated, it does help in battery life, etc.

Hehehe I used this the other day to freak out my friend. I was holding some rare earth magnets and I told my friend to check out a new program I had just gotten. The I moved the magnets close to the phone but where my friend couldn't see them and it went into sleep mode. Then I yelled at my friend for killing my phone and he got all nervous. Um, maybe you had to be there...
