Guys

Just received my 8900 last night. New toy, can't put it down. It is just beaufitul.


Question - I've programmed my BB to hit my home router, and I use Comcast with an average download speed of 12MB/sec. Once I am connected to my router:

1. Are all calls and web browsing applications going through my router instead of through the regular cell signal?
2. Does that mean that calls are not counted against my mobile account, since they are going out via IP?
3. Will my signal change automatically to the cell tower once I get out of range from my home, or do I have to change it manually?

When I'm connected to my Home router I see the UMA icon at the top and a signal strength indicator to the right of it. At those times I understand that the phone uses the router to somehow (I still don't get how) connect to Tmob cell towers for calls, thus freeing up their cell connections. It's not VOIP which only uses the internet. But the minutes still come off of my numbers because I don't pay the $10/month for the tmobile hotspot at home plan. When out of range I see EDGE icon on the phone.

Ok. that's what I thought. That makes sense. I also noticed that is quite fast, which is awesome.

1. yes, when you see "UMA" you will be using WiFi for both data and voice
2. Calls are counted against your plan minutes unless you have the $9.99 unlimited t-mobile @ home plan
3. yes, the signal will be handed off from UMA to GSM/EDGE and vice versa

Please clarify #1. UMA means you are using WiFi for voice, but in the case where you are connected to WiFi but UMA does not show (which does happen from time to time), you are still using it for data. Is this correct?

The router cannot connect you to tmo cell towers...you use your high speed connection to pass you data/voice traffic over the internet to tmo servers instead of using the cell tower to connect to tmo servers...that is how the traffic is cleared up by using uma/wifi calling.

Should be, I guess it could happen if there is an issue connecting back to the UMA servers but you still have access to the internet via WiFi. You can also set the phone to use GSM for voice all the time in which case you would still use WiFi for data, but the normal voice network for calls.

Default AT&T WiFi without Data plan

Someone using the 8320 on AT&T needs to chime in now

I want to get the 8320, Amazon has the phone for $30 but during the process it requires you to get a data plan to get the phone.

I dont want the data plan. I suppose I got the data plan, then cancel it once the first month is up.

Either way though, do these settings work with AT&T to use GSM for voice and WiFi Router for data?


I really need to know before I leave my current provider.

T-Mobile sucks around here so that isnt an option.

Sorry Jonn21, the UMA through the wifi router only works with T-mobile. It's a no-go with At&t. UMA is only available with T-mo in the USA, Rogers in Canada and only about 12 other carriers throughout the rest of the world from what I understand.

Default UMA to Edge switchoff problem

However - watch for the problem many people have of UMA not switching to EDGE on calls. I have that problem all the time. If talking on UMA and go outside of range of my router the call is dropped. Only way I have found to solve is to go into network connections and select the option to always use the mobile network. That way I still get WIFI for data, but my voice is always EDGE.

I have the opposite problem. I can be sitting at home or in the office, connected to UMA and it will switch back to EDGE in the middle of a call. The only way I can stop this is to turn off the mobile network in the connection manager, but then sometimes I miss calls. This drives me nuts because I'm paying the $9.99 so I can keep a low minutes plan.
