Default 1.5.3 has bluetooth gps support

The new google maps mini has bluetooth gps support for the 8300. Once you assign the gps device to it the software always expects it to be there. Google maps, IMHO, is better than bb maps. I got it at OTA at services.google.com.

Main new thing appears to be support for bluetooth GPS pucks. I'll let you know how well it works after the QSTARZ BT-Q818 I just bought on sleazebay arrives. It's supposed to be able to read the positional data from the bluetooth serial port profile connection and show you where you are on the map. Which if it does that, that is all I want. I don't need turn-by-turn directions, I just want to know where the heck I am and use the POI features of Google Maps (i.e. find nearest Starbucks...).

There are a couple of other new things - the menu is getting longer with each release. But since I can't remember what menu options I had before upgrading yesterday, I'm guessing the other new stuff is the real-time-traffic info? I don't recall seeing that before.

You'd think Google would publish release notes someplace, but i can't find any. Hey, what do you expect for FREE?

The real-time traffic has been around for a bit.

Thanks for the heads up on the other stuff.

Just noticed a problem with the new version of Google Maps. Once I enabled Bluetooth GPS, Google Maps would not run without my bluetooth radio enabled. If the bluetooth radio is shut off it keeps popping up a box saying it needs bluetooth to be turned on. I usually leave the bt radio off to save battery. Anyone else notice this?

I noticed it with 1.5.2.

Any solution? Or do you have to have bluetooth enabled every time you launch the app?

I doubt there's a solution. I have definitely noticed that my battery isn't lasting as long as it used to. But I now have a Hollux GPSlim 240 on my keychain, so if I'm mapping I'm also GPS'ing, and battery be dammed.

I don't see that problem with 1.5.3 on a 7250. When I have bluetooth turned off, then I start Google Maps, I just get a small pink message box at the bottom the screen that says "Sorry, we can't determine your location at present." The message box goes away as soon as I start to scroll on the map.

Does Google Maps work only on external GPS devices? Or can it also work with the inbulit GPS on the 8800?
