It's easier to me because it does whole numbers, so if the bill is 37.62, would it be easier to figure out 3.76 times 2 or 38 times 2 and then move the decimal? Works easier for me anyway

That's how I do my math too, I can come up with answers really fast and then have to explain how I pull every math problem apart into pieces that are based on a power, do the powers recombine then and add the leftovers. Once you stop trying to do math the godawful hard way we were taught in *cough*1982*cough* and learn to do it like a puzzle, it's insanely easy and fast. Well, for me at least..

So for that amount, I'd get to $3.75 twice in the blink of an eye. Yeah, 38 times two would be quick too. May have to try that a few times rjw.

I just do a rough estimate to get 20% and go from there. Some people say you only tip on the food portion of the bill, but I use the whole enchilada, bar service and all. Traditionally, I over-tip. Especially for good service. I even tip for takeout. And if it's a small bill, like in a diner, then percentages go out the window. $6 bill and good service? I leave $10. Percentages don't mean much with small bills, and if the waiter/waitress worked hard and was attentive, they should be rewarded with something meaningful. It's a tough business to make a living at. That's just my philosophy.

I have to agree that 20% is a standard when I go out. Thats what I use anyways. I just do the math in my head by rounding it out to make things easier.

Here's how I roll....
If the service is good, as a general rule, I'll leave 12-15%.
If my gf is NOT with me, and the waitress is hot, she gets what I call "hot" dollars...usually another 5-20%+, regardless of level of service. More if there is an abundance of visible cleavage.
Dudes on the other hand, get the minimum, regardless of level of service.

I think we might be twins - I follow the exact same philosophy. Ive had people question why I've lefty such "big tips" on breakfast at a diner. My thought: If I only left the standard 20% on my $10 breakfast, she's making 2 freakin' bucks! 2 bucks?!!?!? I'll leave her a 5 dollar tip. 3 extra dollars doesn't make a difference to me - but if even half her customers did that, it would make a HUGE difference to HER....And trust me, if you do that a few times and visit the same places over and over - the servers remember you and you always get outstanding service.

I use even percentages to make the math easy. The minimum I leave is 20% unless the service is absolute garbage.
On large bills (over $100), I usually tip around 30%. I also tip on alcohol.
If I'm just buying alcohol, it is a minimum of a $1 per drink. Drinks over $10 move into the percentages.
