I think 40K is very liberal. I don't know if it's lag or dropped packets but teathering a laptop to a GPRS device is the most frustrating thing currently in my life. I don't ever remember a page completely loading before I clicked to another or gave up...

I left my TV on when I was doing the GPRS tethering.

It does remind me of when 33.6k modem came out and we kept saying WOW on how fast you could load a web page.

Well, you can thank the European Union for that. But keep in mind, all North American, most South American, some African, many Asian, and all of Australia also use CDMA. And there are several European countries with CDMA too... it isn't an NA only technology.

Australia (Telstra CountryWide) probably has the best CDMA network outside of North America. It is probably the only network in Asia you will be able to roam to in Asia (although the deal to do so is apparently not completely in place yet).

India has a reasonable CDMA network as well.

There are several other CDMA networks out there, but quite frankly they are not very good compared to the GSM/GPRS alternatives in the specific country.

And although South Korea has CDMA it is not the same standard as the NA CDMA so you can't roam your Verizon or Sprint device there anyway. They are their own little pocket of non-compatibility just like Japan

What kills GPRS is the incredibly long latency time between packets. Plus GPRS that we use is asymetric, and the up channel is VERY narrow; these factors together make the perceived speed of GPRS intolerable for most PULL applications. GPRS is find for seamless PUSH email like RIMs email network....but that won't cut the mustard for long. EVDO and some the new modern handsets on the Verizon network are pretty remarkable and make PULL web browsing and remote realtime logins POSSIBLE TODAY. RIM better get on their horse quick and drop the electron like its hot WITH highspeed data capabilites. EDGE will be a stop gap effort from the GSM camp until the world goes CDMA2000/UTMS/3G; whatever the hell other sexy acronym they will think of next to keep us all confused.
