Question Weekend phone?

Please Login to Remove!

I have an 8700 and love it. I'd like to have separate phone for weekends that I could take jogging, boating, whatever without worrying about my expensive BB. Key features would be (in order):

1. Small and light
2. Syncs with Outlook on my PC
3. Charges/syncs via USB
4. Hopefully cheap ($150 max)
5. Candy bar style - not flip phone

Any ideas?

I have a RAZR. Does everything except it is a flip. Motorola Phone Tools software links to Outlook and has a bunch of other features. Works wery well.

I forward the BB to the RAZR on weekends.

I'm thinking possibly a Nokia.

They make a good deal of candy bar phones and offer the ability to sync with Outlook via PC Suite.

Cingular 2125.
It's tiny.
It's beautiful.
It's sturdy.
The screen is superb.
It takes great pictures which you can e-mail or MMS.
It takes good videos which you can e-mail or MMS.
It streams radio and TV.
It checks your e-mail every 15 mins.
It has a fast browser that gets all websites including those that the BB doesn't (such as Bank of America's website).
It has a voice recorder that you access with one button. Better than typing notes.
It uses Windows Smartphone 5.0, which is really good. It syncs all of your Outlook info.
When you put a memory card in there, you can have 2MB of storage for your photos and long videos.
The battery is superb.

I use it as a companion phone with the 8700c. With the two of them together, you have everything you need.

I was thinking of the same thing. However, the reviews on www.phonescoop.com were good and bad, so I have held off

But the 2125 doesn't come anywhere near requirement #4

4. Hopefully cheap ($150 max)

Full retail is $299.

The Cingular 2125 is $199 after the rebate.

There are good and bad reviews for all phones. I would never have the 2125 as a primary phone. It's no match for the 8700c. It is an excellent SECOND phone. I use it to fill the gaps in the 8700c features. And because it's so small, it's no hassle to carry it with you as a second phone.

Incidentally, it's zipier that the full Windows 5.0.

That's the price with a new line activation.

Mightyeric didn't say but I was under the impression that since he's looking for a backup phone, not a back up line, he'd be paying full retail.

Incidently, in looking at the Cingular site I notice they have the Audiovox SMT 5600 refurb on sale for $149. That meets all of your requirments.

I also use a 8700. I wanted a weekend/backup to my BB so I bought a new 7100g off ebay for 165. There were used ones for 139.99. It meets all for your criteria AND still does email. I've had mine for 2 days and love it. It is actually better as a phone than my 8700. Its louder and clearer. AND I can use the same car charger and sync cable as my 8700. It is the perfect companion to a 8700.

so how would this work...

if i got an extra phone to use on the weekend would i have to:

1) get an extra line with my carrier?
2) be able to use an extra sim card...so i have 1 line but two phones with different sim cards?
3) remove the sim card from BB and use it on this extra phone...

which one would work...and what is the recommended inexpensive method to being able to use a n extra phone on the weekend.

thanks

Hmmm... am I really the only one that doesn't see the point to carrying around a second phone? For me, the crackberry is all about convergance. It does everything I want it to do. Besides, what kind of crackhead would I be if I left my crack at home on my desk on the weekend? ;)

There's really no way out of the two line problem. If you just want to take the second phone with you on the weekend, and leave the BB behind, then you can set the BB8700c to forward all calls to the second phone.

Stay away from the 5600. I sold a few and they all had problems. Had the potential to be a great device. maybe future ones will improve

I forgot the mention that the 2125 is voice activated. For example, I say "e-mail" and it brings up the messaging program. I say dial Fred and it dials Fred.

I emphasize that for the BB8700 user, the 2125 is a good second phone, not by any means a replacement for the 8700c.

Regarding Phonescoop, the reviews on the 2125 are very good. Here's the link:

I have a moto slvr for my weekend phone. Very slim, lightweight, and pretty cool looking. Syncs with Outlook so have the same phone book and calendar as my 8700. Got sick of swapping the sim (the 8700's battery door and removal of the sim are a pain in the x$$) so I converted to family plan and added a line for $10. Fwd my 8700 calls to the slvr and I'm set!

LOL@corey.

I've got a RAZR as my backup/weekend phone. Looking at buying the VK2000.
