Default BB has problems with non-SiRF chipsets?

Please Login to Remove!

I went to the buygpsnow site and their sales staff advised me that the MTK based systems have problems with the BB bluetooth, the connection breaks randomly. They advised that I stick with the SiRF chipset for BB use. They said anything but the SiRF chipset would be unreliable. Anybody know anything about this?
Thanks.

I am using a MTK BT GPS with good results on my 8320. The problem isn't with the BT GPS units themeselves. It's a problem with the RIM bluetooth stack. On OS 4.2.1 and up the bluetooth will randomly loose the connection. I have the BT-359 (SiRF chipset) and it happens with that model too.

The GPS I've been using lately is the Freedom Keychain GPS 2000. Smallest GPS unit I've seen. It's quick to boot up and has been reliable with my BB.

Thanks. I have a BB 8700c on AT&T. My company just pushed a new OS and I notice that my Motorola H500 ear phone has a little trouble - the person at the other end suddenly can't hear me. I didn't notice this problem before. So I think the bluetooth may be broken in my current version. How do I determine my OS version? I want to report this problem to my IT group. I would expect any bluetooth device to have the same problem, but you never know.

I am in the process of sending back my Freedom Keychain 2000. On a Daily basis about 30 minutes into a trip the whole gps unit would go black and then the bluetooth with flash. The only way for me to get it to work was to turn it off and back on.

Freedom has already promised to replace the one i have once they recieve it back, but i am not sure they will refund me the shipping to send the "defective" one back.

My buddy at work also purchased one of these keychains and he said it has been rock solid for hours driving around.

I am hoping mine was just a bad one.

I tested it on the pearl 8100 and the curve 8320.

For now I have my very reliable globalstat gps puck.

I tried today to ship back the keychain to Freedom in England and UPS wanted 77 dollars!!!!!!

I am heading on down to the post office after work to send it that way....

what are your thoughts?

The longest I've used mine at any give time is about 15 minutes. I've not had any problems. I'll be taking a road trip after Christmas and will give it a good 5 hour try. We'll see.
