I have just received a used blackberry 9700 from my friend. On his laptop everything works fine, however whenever I try to connect the usb to the blackberry my laptop would recognize it and start charging but Blackberry Desktop does not recognize it for whatever reason. I have tried many things, such as restarting my laptop, taking out the battery of my blackberry and restarting it but nothing seems to work. Whenever I connect via bluetooth it works, however I cannot send files without it being connected via USB. Please help!

I assume that options, memory, auto-enable mass storage when plugged in - has been selected?

Make sure. Also make sure that there is no compression or encryption enabled.

Start up Desktop Manager

Then plug it in to the laptop (make sure it's a BB brand USB cable (others WILL NOT WORK).

An autoplay window should pop up. Select the bottom option - select folder to view files

That should be it.

Ensure that you have BlackBerry Desktop Manager installed. Restart the computer and then plug the BlackBerry in, it will then install drivers.

As correctly suggested by Wolf_Dreams ensure that Mass Storage Mode is Enabled.
Check it in Options>Media Card.

Are you perhaps using a hub or something between the USB socket on the laptop and the BlackBerry?

Do you have other USB sockets on the laptop, and have you tried them all?

Have you done troubleshooting on the USB port on the laptop? Any errors on the port? What about deleting the port and then reinstalling?

Do you have another computer you can try?

I tried all of the USB sockets in my laptop, still no luck
Also is it necessary for me to have a memory card installed, because right now I do not have any installed.

The lack of media card doesn't have anything to do with your issue. But you will want one eventually if you want to store music and pictures, etc--you don't want to use main memory for that.

Also whenever I go to Device Manager on my laptop and right click blackberry smartphone it says "Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)".

That's your issue.


Just to be sure, do a cold reboot on the computer. Shut it down completely. Count to ten. Restart it.

Do a hard reset on the blackberry. With the power on, remove the battery for at least 30 seconds.

When computer and BlackBerry have booted, start desktop manager, then connect the BlackBerry. What happens?

In device manager, Uninstall the drivers for the device. Reboot and then let the computer detect the phone when you plug it in and it will install the necessary driver for it.

I'd uninstall the driver, search to make all entries of the driver has been totally erased then follow sytner's advice.
