Hey, I finally decided to RTFM. And guess what? You can do some very cool things with pictures in OS 4.0. Even without BES/BWC upgrade. I am running 4.0.0.100.

No, you still can't open pictures attached to email messages -- you'll need to wait for the BES/BWC upgrade for that. BUT -- if you go to a web page with pictures on it, and go to SELECT MODE, you can scroll down to the picture, and you'll see a dotted line around the image. Now, if you click the trackwheel you will get the option to SAVE PICTURE. Give the picture a name, and PRESTO! When you go to the new PICTURES application, the image is listed (actually, it also displays a thumbnail of the image, and gives its size!). You can OPEN (to view full screen), DELETE, or -- SET AS HOME SCREEN, or -- SET AS STANDBY SCREEN!!! This is extremely cool! And moreover, I can now remove my personal image viewer application and reclaim my lost 1MB of storage!!!

Hopefully, these features will be the same with pictures attached to email messages -- but to be honest, the manual actually doesn't say that -- it only refers to images on the web.

When I have a bit more free time I'll write a short review of BrickBreaker on 4.0.0.100. Overall, it's still pretty addictive...but it's a bit buggy, control is not as good, and the color scheme is weak. I've made it to Screen 16 of 34, score of 9420. This time it's all about staying alive. More later.

Default Software Version 4.0

Hey guys-
How can I get this version of the OS? It's not on T-mobile and it seems like several people have it. What's up?

Good news for Rogers customers (as an initial deployment before BlackberryOS 4.0),

Rogers just did some server upgrades, and now Over-the-Air downloads now work and full HTML is enabled without need for MDS or RBRO tricks, get your service books resent to you from your BWC webmail. Full TCP/IP will likely wait until Rogers release BlackberryOS 4.0.

Actually Rogers upgraded their servers to OS 4.0 BWC, and if you have a beta copy of 4.0, you have full access to anything and everything that will be available. full tcp/ip stack, etc...

I got to test this. The problem is conflict between Mailstreet and Rogers, I am afraid of losing Mailstreet. I'll test this carefully, preferably when I am back from Indy.

Update: There's no conflict! Please see my DIBS on BIBS: JavaScript/Tables/Background/Animations

HaTaX, I do not think anyone has deployed BWC 4.0 for 7510 users yet.

Does anyone have a list of features that Do / Do Not work with BES? If not I will try to get a copy of the OS for testing with BES and see what I can find.

Thanks

I had a small BWC issue yesterday and spoke with a Tier 1 and Tier 2 support tech from TMobile BB and he had no idea what was going on. Just gave me the canned, well we don't have any knowledge of that, but the process is...... I said, yeh, blah, blah, blah.

is it possible to program PIN to PIN (Peer-to-Peer) messages in 4.0? It doesn't work in 3.7.1 for me.

Only way I have found (other than using the much discussed screensaver application developed by Klaus Thiele) is to go to a web page, go into SELECT mode, highlight a picture, and select SAVE. You can then view the picture in the PICTURES application, and set it as a home screen or standby screen as well.

Well having installed the new 4.0 OS on a ATTWS 7210, here's my findings...

Foremost, if you use NotifyLink for corporate groupwise email, attachment service has quick working. I'll investigate this more from work tomorrow, but initial findings are that it is apparently disabled with the new OS. I'll get with notifylink developers on this as well sometime this week to see what's up. Everything else works fine.

Network usage is MUCH improved. NotifyLink is a 3rd party app that installs it's own email client to check it's email from a server setup back next to the GW server. It polls every 3 mins from the device, and server pushes out emails/tasks/calendar updates as well (very inefficient I know, but GW doesn't have many options until BES 4.0 is released). When NL was polling previously with 3.7, the device would be almost unusable for about 30 secs if it had email to pull down. This works much better now. While it still slows some, it has become much more usable.

I still haven't been able to access the default BB browser, only the ATTWS mLife browser. This is because it's a work contract and they don't allow individuals access to online ATTWS accounts to setup BWS. Anyone know of a workaround for this? I don't care about the BWC email, just interested in the full BB browser. RBRO doesn't seem to work on the ATTWS browser either.

Brickbreaker is improved. I like the extra levels and looks of it, though the textured backgrounds make it a little harder to see the ball. Maybe they'll hash that one out in the final release....

I like the new search option. VERY handy.

I'm going to try to play with the TCP settings tomorrow... Still wondering what info to put in there. I'll investigate later on that one. Maybe it's nothing. Anyone know if you have to register with BWC to enable use of MobileSSH and webmessenger and all that?

Anyways, when I can take a look at more of it and get it fully enabled I'll post more....

Dunno if this is a bug or not, but when opening the mLife browser, clicking "Go To" and manually entering in a link... if the link has more characters in it than space allows, it doesn't hop down to the next line under, it starts over at the beginning of the line and puts it in front of http://

IE:

Trying to go to http://phenix.rootshell.be/~bfrye/pics/puppy1.JPG yields 1.JPGhttp://phenix.rootshell.be/~bfrye/pics/puppy

You can't backspace or access the image. Not sure on clicked hyperllinks but they appear to be working fine.
