Question on Gchat and Gmail

Sorry, I'm new to BBerry and have a question regarding the gchat features. I get my gmail from the blackberry and my desktop. My customers are also in gchat (a select few!), and I had someone say I was online when I don't think I was...(customer tried to contact me and thought I was ignoring him in chat)
My question is - when I download my gmail from the blackberry, does it show my gchat status as green (active)? Or do I need to log into the gchat feature to show as active?
