Hi,

One of our BES users, keep losing her emails and call logs, sometimes like 1 day there is no email, I check BES log and I see those messages are delivered, but there is nothing on her BB, no missed call, history for that periode of time. Suddenly it starts working properly (still missing emails in that periode) for few hours and then stop again.

I see I'm not alone here:

She ran out of space on her pearl.
First thing to do is to pop the battery out and in.
Then delete and extra languages and input packs that she doesn't need.

You can see how much "file free" memory there is under Options--status. There should be about 15mb free if you have not deleted stuff like the languages and sample video. If you do there will be about 28mb free. You can delete that stuff under Options-Advanced-Applications. Memory decreases gradually for reasons unknown. You can restore it by pulling the battery.

I ran into this yesterday. All of a sudden I had only 4 emails when I should have had over 100 in the inbox. I also noticed I lost 2 weeks of call logs (I've only had my 8100 for 2 weeks so I lost all of them).

I have 7 MB's free.

So how does one prevent things like this happening in the future?

Reboot the phone regularly by battery pull or use the SoftReset applet.

Regularly? What's that mean? Once per week? More? Less?

I've only had the thing for 2 weeks and the device had almost 7 MB of free memory.

I'm assuming RIM is working on this? I've had a few BB's the past 6 years and can count on one hand how many times I had to reset a BB because of a problem.

I guess 'regularly' depends on your usage style. When you reboot, how much free memory do you show?

I've seen this thread a few times now. It is due to lack of memory space on the device -- a memory card will not (apparently) help. The common fix is to do a hard reset of the device by removing the battery every week or two.

FWIW -- I've never EVER had this happen to me with my TMO running TMO BB OS 4.2.0.64. I upgraded to the Cingular BB OS 4.2.0.71 and have still never had this happen to me.

As a previous posted suggested, remove all unnecessary languages, apps from the BB you can and ensure you are running the latest (.71?) version.

You should also ensure that your BB cleans up any old email from the device. I have mine delete any messages older than 15days as I don't really need to reference stuff on my BB that old (it is still available on my desktop Outlook client).

I'm rebooting it now:
Before Reboot
File Free: 7,406,988 bytes
After Reboot
File Free: 11,923,100 bytes

Before the reboot a deleted a few pictures and a rington (about 1 or 2 MB's worth)

Hmmm... do you have a lot of 3rd party apps installed?
After a reboot I have ~40MB free. As a previous poster stated, you can delete unneeded languages. You can also delete the sample video. You can also get a microsd card and move all your own pix and tones out of device memory.

I have the Google Suite (maps, gmail, news), BBNotifier, and Telenav--that's it.

I have about 20 photos I have taken with the camera.

I'm also on a BES so I'm not sure if all the email in my folders is contributing to the storage problems or not.

I just bought a 512 MB MicroSD card so I'll start to save my media on the card. Now I just have to figure out how to move the existing photos from the internal memory to the MSD card.

You should just keep an eye on memory and reset as needed until RIM addresses the memory leaks.

You might want to look into what components you don't need and can be uninstalled. Simple ones are unneeded languages and the sample vid, which can be removed via the Desktop Manager. You can also reduce the reserved memory for pictures, which adds it back to the general pool. Altogether, I end up with about 40MB free after a reboot and I have more apps installed than you list.
