my G/F's 7100 is at the PIN screen - but she has to change to lowercase to do this.

Trouble is - it won't let her

Normally it does though.

Any ideas what to do - she's got 3 attempts left :(

Before trying again, I would power off the device, take the battery out. Wait a minute, put it back in, and the device will turn on, now try the password...
