LOL. I figured it would drain faster, but didn't expect to go from 80% to 15% in 4 1/2 hrs. It's all good though, I may put it back to 100 or maybe to 70 as I never had UMA problems (asides from the current outages).

I put mine at 75...battery is just going too fast.

Edit: Just put it back to 100.

UMA worked for me this morning, but was out last night. I think I'll change my settings to 100 again too. The battery was draining way too fast.

If anyone is brave enough to try the DD-WRT on the tmo linksys router and has some good results, please post and let us know!

I'd try but I don't have any time....booo!

Thanks to hdawg for pointing me to this KB at RIM (not much new except for the DTIM setting):

BlackBerry Search Results

Recommended settings for the Wi-Fi network when using UMA voice service

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Doc ID : KB14461
Last Modified : 2007-12-13
Document Type : What Is

Environment
BlackBerry® 8820 smartphone
BlackBerry® Curvexxx8482; 8320 smartphone

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Details
To optimize the Unlicensed Mobile Access (UMA) voice service on a Wi-Fi® enabled BlackBerry smartphone, the following settings are recommended on the Wi-Fi network:

Configure all access points for Delivery Traffic Indication Map (DTIM) to 2.
Turn on Wireless MultiMedia (WMM) and make sure that voice traffic is prioritized (that is, the UMA voice traffic is marked and it is prioritized over the wireless local area network (WLAN) link).
Make sure the latest firmware update for the wireless router is applied from the vendor.

rockin, ok here's what the DD-WRT team has to say:

DTIM Interval

The default value is 1. This value, between 1 and 255, indicates the interval of the Delivery Traffic Indication Message (DTIM). A DTIM field is a countdown field informing clients of the next window for listening to broadcast and multicast messages. When the router has buffered broadcast or multicast messages for associated clients, it sends the next DTIM with a DTIM Interval value. Its clients hear the beacons and awaken to receive the broadcast and multicast messages.

I read that, too. What does it mean exactly....in terms a dumb pilot can understand?

I'd had a beer (or 2 ) when I posted that, wasn't in shape to try and figure it out. If I read that correctly it's a numerical value that - when sent from the router to the client - tells the client "hey, check in again in this many counts" (seconds?).

It would appear to me that reducing the DTIM from 1 to 2 actually causes the client to check *less often* (think every 2 seconds instead of every 1 second) which, if I were to guess, allows the BB to breathe a little more and save some battery juice. Much in the same way that increasing the beacon interval from 100ms to 50ms eats battery, decreasing the DTIM will slow down the phone-home aspect of the BB and save battery life.

That's my best guess, at least.

Thanks Rivvie!

I've got my beacon set at 80 now and it seems to be fine on battery life. I've yet to notice much difference in changing DTIM from 1 to 2.

The last bit of info I'd like is how, exactly, to set the WMM. When I enabled it it gave me a bunch of fields that were preset. I left the defaults because the online help in DD-WRT doesn't give a very good explanation of how to enter the numbers and just what they mean.

I've got a linksys 300N using dd-wrt v24 beta and it works great. I kept my beacon at 100 because I never had handoff problems and I also have a GSM repeater in my house.

I set the transmit power to 65 as that setting will get me out to my car in the garage with no problem and I never get dropped calls when moving at a normal pace without running or such and leaving the wifi coverage.

I kept most of the other settings the same, otherwise my laptop didn't like to connect to that access point, and it's the G network in the house, I don't like to use the B if I can keep from it.

A big thanks to the OP! I could not get my wifi to work until I changed my router settings as per the first post. Thank you very much.

Default 8320 on Orange and Bethere.co.uk ISP ?????

Hi!

I have a 8320 curve on Orange and use BE Unlimited (bethere.co.uk) as my ISP via a Speedtouch 585 wireless router ( 16MB connection!) I'm in the UK!

My question comes in the middle of this thread as my 8320 decided to show UMA on its display tonight.. I have not set up anything on the router with respect to any ability to use my broadband to make voice connections

What extra CAN I do with this functionality please? Anyone using UMA to advantage with this ISP router combo?

Sincere apologies for coming into this thread but I don't know what I'm missing and don't really know if the UMA icon is being reflected in any more functionality via my phone than if I was in the middle of town

I can see data transfer to the wireless router as the active/inactive flag changes on the router output as the web browser works and Gmail Mobile updates!

Blackberry reports UMA connection successful

QUESTION: how can I make free/cheap voice calls over my broadband using the Blackberry?

johnbullas - you should definitely call your Carrier (Orange UK?), it looks like they are starting to roll out UMA for your area! If you never configured your BlackBerry then it's using the default - attempt UMA when possible - and picking up the new Carrier setup. You don't need to worry about your internet ISP, usually - it just works.

Some providers charge you the same for UMA as non-UMA if you don't sign up for a special plan, but you can add a special plan for a small fee (for T-Mobile USA it's... $10 USD I think?) to allow unlimited (not charged per call) UMA use. You need to contact your Carrier and ask them how to set it up - if it's brand new they may not have a new plan yet, etc.

Wirelessly posted (BB 11020)

Yep. UMA is automatic if its available. If it says UMA, that IS VoIP.

Enjoy the functionality!

Try using Google or calling them, I'm afraid I'm on the other end of the world from you and have no clue. ;)

I know these settings were recommended by Linksys tech for their routers. Would these settings be equally recommended for other wireless routers? I have similar settings that I can change in my DLink DGL-4300 router but don't know if there were specific shortcomings of Linksys routers why these UMA settings were recommended.
