EV-DO: My thoughts from a Cell Phone users view

Ok, so I have a LG that I purchased in August of this year. When Verizon released it (in my area at least). I want to say it's the 8100 (blue face with the MP3 player/mini-SD slot built in).
It is capable of utilizing EV-DO.
So, recently I have been noticing the EV box on my screen (hadn't seen it until recently). About the same time, I noticed that the signal strength has decreased significantly. Now when my phone jumps out of EV and is only 1X, my signal strength rises.
Here is the confusing part:
When all I had was 1X, I had wonderful clarity and signal strength. I could have kissed the ground Verizon walked on (mainly becaus my 1-1/2 years with Sprint were not that great). Anyways, I never had a complaint with Verizon.
Now that EV is out, I get horrible reception in only 1X mode, but like I said, great signal strength. And when it's in EV I get the same clarity, but decreased signal strength.
What happened to standard 1X? How is EV going to surpase if signal strength is at 2 bars at most? (out of 5)
