I have a 8900 and ive had no problems with it until now. All of a sudden the trackball stopped working. It would work only after a certain amount and thumb angle was used.

I initially thought it was the trackball.

I wiped the phone, put in a new OS and then tried and it still did not work.

However, when i took my sim out and turned it on, the trackball worked perfectly fine.

Anyone know what is the cause and possible fix?

its the trackball, seems to be defective. having it work without the sim makes no sense. try and get an exchange.

Agreed. I wouldn't even mention the working without sim card thing for the simple fact that they might just try to fix it and send you a crap phone in the mean time. Say that it doesn't work and follow all their steps (water damage stickers, serial number, imei, etc). Also, see if you can get it replaced for free under RIM's Warentee as the carrier will charge you around 50 for a replacement

thanks for the input, but its interesting, because i applied some pressure to the sim when it was installed and the track started working fine!

So i put a few layers of tape over the sim and the then slid it in and started working fine.

Very weird, but now that its working its worth not going through the trouble of waiting for a new bb to come.

Why not tell your carrier your reception has degraded and you would like a new SIM card to see if would resolve the issue.

thanks, i will indeed do that...

but i was just wondering if there is a direct relation between the sims contacts/placement and the trackball and other physical functions of the phone...
