Hi all,

I am a Blackberry user since June 2006 when the Curve first came out. I recently had to upgrade to the BOLD 9000 when a software update/glitch rendered my Curve useless.

So I love the Bold; it has great features. But one thing that has been bothering me a lot lately is that its ringer and notifications (i.e. for new call, emails, text, etc.) are EXTREMELY quiet. Does anyone else have this issue or hear if this is a known problem? It appears it isn't widespread based on google searches I did so I'm hoping this is a one-off with my particular phone because I have a new one shipping to me as we speak.

Basically, even if I set my ringer profile volume to HIGH (both in and out of holster) it is barely audible from a few feet away. I've tried using different mp3 files as well as using the pre-loaded BBerry sounds.

You know the default sounds for incoming text messages, for example? That LightSpeed--it comes out so soft...and I don't think it was like that when I first got the phone. Could my speakers have screwed up (I have only had the phone for 2 weeks and have treated it in extremely pristine condition)? Or is this some other glitch I might have had.

I've done the batter pull, I've tried switching to different rings--the speaker phone, notifications, ringer just are so darn soft like a whisper. I would love to hear thoughts advice. Thanks.

Don't know if this will apply. How about turning on Audio Boost. This is found in the options of the Media setup.

i've been pretty ok with the notification alerts. for the most part, i've got all my volumes set to about Medium. and i have no issues! Plus my ringtone is pretty loud in itself, 'cause it's a custom ringtone.

i've never missed an alert tbh. maybe try OS upgrade? but if you're getting a new piece, then you should wait and see if you have a problem there too..hopefully not!

The sound volume of ringtones and notifications seems to be also related to the OS version; but it's not always global across all sound files. What I mean by that is that I always used to use 'notifier cricket' for email notifications when using the vibrate profile. The cricket notification was quiet enough to be used with vibrate unless the room was completely dead, in which case it could be heard. After an OS upgrade (sorry, I don't remember which), cricket became much too loud to be used in this fashion. I had to switch to using some other notification sound which was not as loud.

Now that said, not all notifications became louder as I described above. Some of them became quieter, one of those being 'notifier lightspeed', which I used to use as the repeat reminder with BB Alerts. I can no longer hear this under the same conditions that I could hear it before.

To get around this problem, I downloaded an archive from the internet which had mp3/mid/wav versions of stock ringtones and notifications for the Bold. I copied these onto my onboard storage. I then used MP3Gain on it to increase and decrease the volume on a few of the individual notifications that I use most often. I also stitched together some short single-burst ringtones along with a silence sound file to form a longer multi-burst ringtone using a program called MP3Merge. I then increased or decreased the gain on the resulting file, again using MP3Gain to suit my needs.

new device solved the problem--must have been an issue with the "new" device i originally bought from the att buggers (i also noticed my new blackberry that i got last week also isn't "loose" around the frame like my last one--it appears i got a new "return" last time and this one is great...

only complaint is that battery life (because of 3G) isn't as long lasting as the curve or a regular phone but i love it.

buy a extended battery lol I haven't yet but i might plan to cuz battery life sure sucks. I can't last a day with it full from mourning last me only till night thats it i guess cuz i surf alot and txt n everything but yeah 3g sure kills the battery. Not as bad as Iphone but I can say compare to other phones the batt life sux.

I can confirm this ... it's a problem with the device. My volume was fine and now it's died as well :( It's most obvious when testing speakerphone... you activate speakerphone and the loudness doesn't change at all. Something electronic (or software) is causing it to use the wrong speaker I think.

from what i have done with my bold is a os upgrade and the volume came back. the grey box i have is hard plastic it doesnt lift. i think there may be a glitch in the os. some it affects some it doesnt.

It's a mechanical problem with the phone. There is some PCB board that is semi-shorting out. It is a well known 9000 problem, and if while your playing a song, mp3, ringer.. you take the top of your phone and squeeze it with your thumb and index finger (hard) it will get loud, VERY loud, back to normal loud. There was a picture guided tutorial Ii found (not on this site) that documented exactly what to unscrew off the back and what solder on the PCB board to pry back away from the speaker.

I'll try to find it and update this - but I'm sure thats what your problem is.

Also FYI - the squeeze fix only works for a day or two and then it goes back to being hush hush.

I bought my Bold in November 2009 from an AT&T store. I have the Audio Boost turned on. When I reboot (take the battery out), the notifications volume is very loud. It becomes very low hours later until I reboot again. It seems as though I have to keep rebooting to keep the volume loud.

I have tried this with my Bold 9000. It works for a while (as if I have rebooted), then the volume gets low again. I have to keep doing this.

This worked for me.

It's bizarre. Squeeze things, lift things, put bits of cardboard in... and all this on a very expensive phone.

Well, I don't know how long this fix will work for, but I think if the problem comes back, I will dump the phone.
