Default Tethering with bold on AT&T for free?

Please Login to Remove!

I have read many threads about this, but still do not have a clear answer. Can someone confirm for me that they have in the past (and can currently) tether on at&t without the tethering specific plan, and without being charged extra?

Yes, I do it everyday, and I have a Bold with BlackBerry Personal ($30/month) and a Bold with BlackBerry Enterprise ($45/month). Both can tether just fine without the tether plan.

I'd also like to know how this works.

You can but you run the risk of getting caught. The blackberry plans, both personal and corporate DO NO include tethering, there are specific plans that add this feature without any possible charges to you above the plan. In the plan agreement it says that tethering is not included, and it is now a policy of ATT that any phone or plan that is being used with unattended abilities is subject to charges and possible termination of service.
With the surge of unlocked iphones and people using those as ad hock 3g connections for their laptops or people buying iphone and attaching media net unlimited ($15), ATT has made a lot larger of and effort to roll these people due to the load on the network
Bottom line is that you can do it without, but if you like your service and your mobile number and don't want to risk attempting to dispute an $11,000 bill when they catch you, i would recommend NOT doing it and just paying the extra free
But what would I know, i Defiantly don't work for ATT or anything like that

And with tethering on at&t your data goes through a completely different apn than your browser or email goes through if you have a tethering plan. If anyone tries that free tethering without a tethering plan I'd advise you to use very little data because it will be obvious if you're constantly using 2-4GB of data a month.

One more way that AT&T can stick it to you....

T-Mobile has tethering included in all their BlackBerry plans.

Former T Mobile customer here. Tethering with EDGE was very tedious and annoying. I was more than happy to pay for a tethering plan with AT&T. Tethering on 3G is so much better.

Yes, but since the Bold is the only 3G BlackBerry for AT&T, this was not available previously and yet they still charged for it when others didn't.

Best post on here. He is correct, you CAN do it, but they DO check monthly to see who is using a insane amount of data vs. the plan they have etc. (that $15 iphone plan is a great example, i see people trying to do this all the time)..

Anyway, for only $30 more a month, i dont think its a huge deal to just pay for tethering. I mean, a 3g Aircard is $60 a month + extra 2yr contract + extra taxes...
