Default Is it possible to use the Bold as a modem for internet access??

Please Login to Remove!

We're trying to configure one of our Blackberry Bold's to a Vista laptop so that it can be used as a modem for internet access. We've previously been able to do this with Blackberry Pearl's under Vista no problem.

We've got the Bold connected via USB and the Desktop Manager software sees the phone etc for synching and so on.

In Device Manager under Standard Modem we've got the following string:

AT+CGDCONT=1,"IP","INTERNET"

The number that it's trying to dial out is *99***1#, the username and password are as our provider gave us.

Our operator is Vodafone (UK). They have got no idea on how to do this - we've spoken to almost a dozen people in their Blackberry support team.

It seems as though the Bold is either incompatible with Vista or the whole process of using the Bold as a modem just doesnt work.

Any ideas or are we wasting our time?

I dunno. Instead of all that config I just installed AT&T's Communication Manager. Worked right out of the box without tweaking anything.

Seems it's acceptable use on Rogers and there is no additional cost.

Well I'm on Rogers, and it works perfectly for me!

$35 for it? Hmm... I rather save that money and just setup it up myself... Seriously takes less than 5mins to setup! Probably faster than download this program and installing it...

Tethering is often not included in the Unlimited data plans for PDAs, read through the agreement or ask a rep via customer care. If u get rolled for tethering its not pretty, i have seen bills in excess for 2 thousand

Tethering is included in Rogers plans.

This includes the current new $30 Rogers BlackBerry plan that is essentially the $15 Smartphone Value Pack (VM,CID,10000TXT/10000MMS) plus 500MB data. Or the grandfathered $30/6gig plan.

Works just fine...up and running in less than 2 minutes on XP...Haven't tried VISTA, though. Seems just as fast as my Sierra Aircard, same transfer speeds.

Default not on rogers...

on att, here in the states, all you need is the "communication manager" application installed on the laptop. connect the phone via usb or bluetooth. run the app and hit connect.

course you need the data plan. $$

We've tried all of the above but it still doesn't work.

Has anyone got this working on Vodafone UK under Vista?

I have got this working on Vodafone India with Vista.

I called the BB division of Vodafone suuport and got them to give me the settings.

number to dial is *99#.

I deleted the same from my laptop, as I did not need to use it anymore. I will try and get the initialisation string from vodafone again and post it here later this week.

The string to use is:

+cgdcont=1,"IP","<your Internet APN>"

in the case of vodafone india, the internt apn is www.

so I use:

+cgdcont=1,"IP","<www>"

the number to dial is *99#
