Great news, Blackberry will launch a touch-screen unit with Verizon in the Autumn to go head to head with the dreadful i phone. If succesful, this should put Apple where they belong, in a supermarket!

Slow down t here, fella! The Thunder is still only rumor and innuendo. There's a fair amount of skepticism on this one too, as Verizon hasn't had a Blackberry premier, well, ever. Even if it's true, I don't see it destroying the iPhone.

I would have to see the device first before making any predictions on its greatness.

first of all we all know that name isnt gonna stay around for long. pearl, curve, bold, thunder? dont think so but anyways while i would love to see what blackberry would do with a touch screen phone i'm still on the ropes with the idea. it seems so outside of their norm and i would hate for blackberry to have a blemish on their record by trying to go too far too soon. while i seriously doubt that verizon will be the carrier to launch it (im thinkin tmobile like the 9100) all of us here know that the iphone sucks compared to the blackberry so im not worried about the comparison between the two technologies.

but over all im kinda on the doubting side of the touch screen and would be really sceptical about it but at a slide out keyboard to that and im all over it. :]

DiabloZoe is right. Rim has announced their intent to sell one this year with VZ getting the exclusive on it. Looks like it might be a htbrid CDMA/GSM too like 8330.

I think the fact that Vodafone has secured the exclusive is the reason that VZ have got in on the act, if they do have the US rights it will be mostly due to Voda owning half of VZ

Default Yep, true indeed...

Hi all.

The rumour is confirmed on the website of Belgian national tv today. deredactie.be

Operators are USA Verizon Wireless and EU Vodafone.

So we'll get Bold and Thunder here. Damn, the board is going to ask for new toys again

Have a nice weekend!

I guess the fact that Vodafone is GSM and Verizon is CDMA hasn't caught on yet..

Vodafone owns 49% of Verizon Wireless. Not quite half. And to be sure, the minority partner.

If they could monetize their investment without huge tax implications, I am sure they would.

ATT and T-Mobile has more BB customers so it just doesnxxx8217;t make sense to give Verizon an exclusive on anything. Verizon has never got a blackberry first why change something thatxxx8217;s worked so well with regards to releasing on GSM ATT and T-Mobile first? Doesnxxx8217;t make business sense to me. For the record just because news outlets say a source familiar with RIM doesnxxx8217;t make it a confirmation.

VZN needs something like this so my guess is they schelled out the $$ for exclusivity if that it really the case.

Why not give them an exclusive. Just because ATT and Tmo have more berry users doesnt mean they should get all the exclusives. I am sure the next sentence out of someones mouth will be because they disable everything (meaning they only disable GPS) on their devices.

So what if they disable GPS that doesnt mean they dont have rights to an Exclusive deal.

Lets break down to dollars and cents

ATT + Tmo = More BB Users

That all means more Units sold out the gate for rim. Also take into account ATT and TMO has lower credit standards allowing more people to obtain this device if they dont already have ATT or T-Mobile. Verizon wants your first born to get service. Just from money stand point it doesnt make sense thats all I am saying. I guess If Verizon gave them a lot of money and promises a certain amount of units sold then by all means give it a try although I dont think it will work. I have GPS in my car and found the GPS on my 8800 was clumsy to say the least so I have no gripe with Verizon wanting to do whatever with the network they own.

well I think you may be wrong I have several friends who I got to switch over to VZW and they have the crappiest credit ever and they were able to switch with zero down payment, both ATT and Tmo wanted them to do pay as you go. I had an outstanding bill from them from well over 7 years ago and they didnt ask me to pay it off first.

And to be honest maybe this is RIMs way of getting more BB users on Verizon especially since they are the only ones who enforce the BB data plans. I mean yes ATT and TMO may have more BB users but how many really use the service to its fullest. Look how many folks come on here daily asking how to use the BB with out a data plan.

Here are some more dollars and cents: AT&T + VZW + T-Mobile + Sprint + all the other regional and smaller carriers would have equaled more units for Apple, but that hasn't prevented the iPhone from being a success. You also make far too many assumptions about VZW and their credit standards. As to the issue of exclusivity, it's not like the 5-year deal that Apple signed with AT&T, and given the time frame between GSM and CDMA releases, it is almost as if the GSM carriers have a time-sensitive exclusivity with near every release.

A friend of mine worked for radio shack for years and he told me that VZW was by far the hardest to get service and would come back with 500 to even 1,000 deposit. This was about 4 years ago and could have changed since then.Hey maybe it will work who knows but a life time exclusive? thats never been RIM'S business model.
