Better question-which will best meet customer needs?
"First" doesn't always mean "best".

some versions of 3G are capable of this, all 4G devices *should* be capable of this as well.

the at&t HSDPA network is considered 3.5g and you are capable of voice and data connections at the same time.
4g wont happen for many years though. Even these so-called "4g" technologies are still just the tail end of a 3g technology with (low end) 4g speeds (WiMax and LTE). 4g will be a completely IP based wireless network where voice calls are just VOIP that will obviously co-exist with simultanious data sessions. Its very exciting...but most likely three to four year away (maybe more now that at&t is saying they hope to milk HSDPA through 2009).

that is my understanding on why its g3.5.
on a side note while current evdo rev. a is capable of both, none are implenting it and when they do, its getting named g4 i think.

Thats because EV-DV was costly solution without much benefit (only like 3Mbps). Easier to maintain an EV-DO network with a 1x voice network and save the money untill a better solution (WiMax or LTE) was developed and tested.

I can confirm that I've had a 3.5G device and it's cool being able to talk on the phone while surfing the net plug in those hands free, and surf! Kill's the battery bigtime, but hey ... Progress is progress! Right?

its still 3rd gen cdma, and it is capable of both. when vz/sprint deploy g4 "data / voice running in parallel its what they will coin as g4.
which kinda ticks some off at least att is gonna coin it at 3.5 and i think most gsm carriers will too.

i just think its practical, wifi is awesome, but overall, when their is no wifi, etc and all you have is a network, and you need to send something important and don't want to recall, both at the same time, is a big step fwd.
