Default Opinions on upgrading to an 8830

Please Login to Remove!

Would like to get some feedback on upgrading to an 8830/Sprint. I currently have an 8703e on Sprint and am not due for a carrier upgrade until next spring. I have an opportunity to pick up a slightly used 8830 for $125 and thought it would be nice to have an upgraded BB, and one that will probably have OS 4.5 much sooner than my 8730. So, what do you think?

It's a nice BB. If you need international capabilities, go for it, but I'm not sure that I would recommend spending your money unless you need that (or you want a new toy). If you simply want a new toy, look at the for sale board here and see if you can find a budget Curve, perhaps.

I got the 8830 as my first BB in January and I never looked back. It's great. I am on verizon though so the GPS isn't there, but my TOM TOM works just fine.

If you want a new toy $125.00 is a great price for an 8830. Even on these forums they sell for allot more than that.

I say if your contract is up, switch to GSM. ATT does not lock down your hardware (GPS) plus you could get in on the 4.5 Beta action ;) After that, get an 8820 for the Wi-Fi or 8810 for the Camera, as both have GPS

Wirelessly posted (My blond BlackBerry)

The 8703e is a good solid device, and there is 8703e 4.5 OS in beta. You can upgrade it now to 4.2 and get pretty much all the same functionality as the 8830.

IMO, I'd wait. Unless you need the int'l funtionality.

Sprint doesn't lock down GPS like Verizon (which you probably already know).

Also check out the FAQ article on buying a used BB on eBay. Same message applies, no matter where you get it. Could save you some grief if you do decide to get the used BB.

And in your case, make sure that it is a Sprint 8830 as they will not activate a non-Sprint BB on their network.

Well, actually Sprint doesn't lock out or cripple anything compared to ATT and Verizon. If Sprint works well for you in your area, I suggest you stay with them. I find the 8830 has been an excellent piece of gear, and the unlocked GSM is a bonus if you travel overseas much. No camera though (which I don't need anyway). If the 8830 that's being offered is really clean, then go for it and enjoy.

That's the thingy you need in an 8830 if you leave North America, right?

Default Love mine

I purchased mine a year ago July and I have been absolutely impressed. Except when I need to do a Powerpoint Presentation, Excel Spreadsheet, or a word document I seldom carry a notebook with me. I could list the many reasons why I love my berry. Just know this is a solid device and is in my opinion one of the better phone choices I have ever made.

Sincerely,
